This book was awesome. Don't get me wrong... it was totally stupid, but so fun to read. I could have done without the addition of ninjas, but the zombies really should have always been there. I assume we've all had idle time with friends, sitting over coffee or drinks, when someone says, "Wouldn't it be funny if...?" Often the sentence is completed with a funny concept, something that makes us laugh for a few minutes, something even that we tell other friends about. The author's mistake was to take this concept and turn it into a book. It's Pride and Prejudice, and there are zombies in it, and that's funny. A few chapters in, the humor wears off. As a writing exercise I suppose it is successful; the zombies fit into the story with very little alteration, so the author's hypothesis is proven. Great. However, to hold my attention, and to add to this work, they have to do a little more than that. I won't be picky; they could change the motivations of the characters, or add a new depth to the circumstances, or stand in allegory for social constructions of the day. Just so long as they do something. As it is, the zombie passages are only noticeable because of their overdone construction and failure to blend in with Austen's writing. It's a little like watching a TV adaptation with a talkative 12-year-old boy. None of that bothers me so much; I have a 12-year-old brother and have laughed at cruder, sillier things with him. What turned me off of this book are Grahame-Smith's non-zombie additions. Extra passages extend each "love scene", explaining in depth each character's motivations - often the characters do this themselves. I cannot think of a greater disappointment to readers or failure for authors than the need to explain, in detail, what is being told. What an insult to Jane Austen, to think that her books need to be further explained to be appreciated. I ignored reviews that said this book was brilliant, but I thought at least it would be clever. Unfortunately it did not even live up to that expectation. Tried to re-read this book but couldn't get through it a second time. Not sure why I four-starred it the first time but it's been demoted to two.
P&P&Z has just too much Austen and not enough zombies. I found myself skimming, skipping larger and larger chunks of text to get to the zombie sequences, desperate to escape the claustrophobic drawing-room chatter of Austen's characters with a little beheading, disemboweling and derring-do. I was really excited to pick up this book. I had heard nothing but good things about it! Sadly, it didnt live up the hype for myself.
I had thought this book would be written in modern English, but it was identical to Pride and Prejudice. This made the book super boring - I had already read Price and Prejudice, I wanted a cool spin with a new kind of story telling. Sadly, it's just Pride and Prejudice with a splash of zombies. Nothing spectacular.
The writer did do an amazing job of adding zombies into the original story, but this book was not my favourite.
Two out of five stars. (
