The Washington Children’s Choice Picture Book Award was started in 1982. All Washington state students in public and private schools, as well as homeschooled students, from kindergarten through third grade in Washington State are welcome to vote. Students hear all 20 nominated picture books, read by their teacher-librarian and/or classroom teacher and participate in literature activities for each book. The WCCPBA committee meets each spring to select the 20 picture book candidates, books that had been published in the last three years, for the next school year. The committee is comprised of school and public librarians from across the state.
