"This is what the old people told me when I was a child.
Long ago when the world was new, there were not many stars in the sky..."

How did the stars get there, then? A spirit-dog stealing cornmeal from an old couple; their grandson catching the thief; the Beloved Woman, a leader among the people, instructing them to gather their instruments and hide. When the spirit dog came back, the people made noise and chased it, and it ran into the sky, cornmeal falling out of its mouth and becoming stars in the Milky Way, or Gil'liutsun stanun'yi, "the place where the dog ran" (pronunciation guide included).

Bruchac and Ross each offer a note at the beginning about "the origin of the story," and there is an illustrator's note as well: the illustrations depict the early 1800s in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, before the Trail of Tears.

The Story of The Milky Way is story of the milky way is how the milky way was formed in the stories of the Cherokee Indians. It starts off with an elderly couple who wake up to find some missing cornmeal. They try to catch the thief who took it and discovered that it was a spirit dog. They decided to scare off the spirit dog and the dog leaped back into the sky. Every piece of cornmeal that dropped was a star in the milky way. I found this book to be very interesting.

I really liked this book because it was interesting. The story depicts what these people believe how the milky way came to be. It was about this great spirit dog that would come and eat an old couples cornmeal. The villagers decided to scare it so that it would never come back and when they did the spirit dog leaped into the sky and ecery piece of cornmeal that it dropped from its mouth in the sky turned into a star.
