If you think you know all you need to know about Diabetes and what causes it, I strongly recommend you give this book a read and realize just how complex the subject really is. This rising disease goes beyond the simple "Fat Man's" disease it has been so commonly labeled. Dan Hurley, a type 1 diabetic himself, takes a deep dive into the statistics regarding the rise of diabetes, then drives right into the variety of possible causes currently under research, and finally concludes with a in depth discussion about what possible cures exist or may be coming in the near future. I guarantee you will walk away from this one with a much better understanding of the many issues faced by today's diabetics ( ) I stayed awake late into the night reading this book, and finished it off by the middle of the afternoon the next day. The writing is that good. Now, here's the thing: I don't have diabetes, and neither does anybody in my immediate family, so my interest is due to the book itself. What I find so compelling about Hurley's perspective is the way that it grabs you and makes you look at this as 1) A major public health crisis, 2) a significant impact on the lives and deaths of people living with the disease, and 3) (most worrying) something that we don't really understand. If you're complacent about this, and you think it could never happen to you, have a read of this book. Even if it doesn't hit you personally, it matters. It matters a lot. This is a fantastic book that not only provides a history of the disease back to the Egyptians but is packed with information on the latest research, studies, and theories on type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This book is very up-to-date and has a bibliography I am planning to pore over for further information. Anyone who suffers from the disease or knows someone who does will find Diabetes Rising to be insightful, interesting, and rather exciting. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and that included reading a review by Scott Strumello. Everything, these days, must be taken with a gigantic grain of salt. The more information you have, the easier it is to have a way to better analyze what is before you and Scott's seems to be a good piece, along with others. http://sstrumello.blogspot.com/2009/11/book-review-dan-hurleys-book-diabetes.htm... Some of the historical information about insulin, for example, was not something I was completely aware of in terms of the arguments over its use and whether or not blood glucose values were really all that important in managing diabetes. I really appreciated the author's personal stories as a Type 1---even more of that would have made the book even more interesting although Hurley writes in a very readable style. näyttää 4/4 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
"With gripping stories, colorful characters, and a wry sense of humor, Dan Hurley takes you to the wealthiest town in Massachusetts, where an outbreak of type 1 diabetes among children has parents up in arms. He travels to Logan County, West Virginia, with the highest rate of type 2 diabetes in the United States (and where the local Wal-Mart sells more snack cakes than any other Wal-Mart in the world). A type 1 diabetic himself since the age of 18, Hurley even participates in an extraordinary clinical trial of an artificial pancreas." --Cover, p. 2 & 3. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
