His Trent's Last Case is regarded as a classic, but I am less fond of it, since it depends on a trick ending. On the other hand, the stories in Trent Intervenes really are little masterpieces. I agree with Ellery Queen that the short story is the perfect form for the detective story, and some of these are nearly perfect in their way. My favorites are The Genuine Tabard, which turns on a point of heraldry (and a point All Souls College, Oxford) and The Old-Fashioned Apache (Apache in the sense of French gangster, not Native American) which depends on a sort of French pig-Latin. I believe that The Clever Cockatoo may have influenced The Incredible Elopement of Lord Peter Whimsey, and The Ordinary Hairpins may have influenced one of Poirot's Labours of Hercules. An intriguing group of twelve mystery stories from the writer of the famed Trent's Last Case. Murder is not the only crime represented here, and in a couple of cases there is not even a crime at all, rather a puzzling series of events ingeniously unraveled by the bright and likeable artist, Philip Trent. I like this writer, and only wish he had written more. näyttää 4/4 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

Twelve stories from the celebrated author of one of the most famous mystery classics ever written, Trent's Last Case. Philip Trent is an artist, a journalist, and an urbane unraveller of highly problematical crimes. Here the unshakable sleuth appears in twelve tales of misadventure, where the crimes that he investigates range from fraud and embezzlement to criminal assault and murder, yet they all succumb to his adept methods even if the criminal sometimes escapes. Trent Intervenes affirms Bentley's reputation as an author of the first rank and displays his ability to write equally well in the short story form. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
