Very good explanations of craft, amazing exercise ideas, and huge selection of examples, helping to expand the scope of what I read. Good suggested bibliographies in every chapter too.

Imaginative Writing is the first book a creative writer should read. Genius short stories, great encouragement, and journal prompts make it one of the first things I'd suggest you put on your shelf. ( )
Burroway makes some enlightening points and has some pretty good pieces as examples of good writing; but the book fails on so many levels. The first being that it is the third edition of a book that has not really been updated in any necessary form since its first edition. Plus, the font is atrocious on the eyes. Another reason I dislike this book is because Burroway borrows from most of her insights made in another book on writing fiction Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft. ( )
