De laatste boom is de tweede beeldroman voor volwassenen door Luke Adam Hawker. Deze beeldromans zijn gigantisch populair geworden door Charlie Mackesy en Shaun Tan en daar ben ik blij om. Het is een genre dat helemaal in deze tijd past; het laat je even stil staan, nadenken én het is een warm dekentje voor je hart en ziel.
Hawker’s eerste boek (Samen) had op mij hetzelfde eerste effect als dit boek: bij oppervlakkige doorbladering denk ik dat het niets voor mij is maar als ik het helemaal lees (en kijk) raakt het me als een mokerslag. Dan blijken de tekeningen beeldschoon, het verhaal immens ontroerend en inspirerend én de boodschap troostend en hoopgevend.
De laatste boom is wederom een prachtig pareltje. Neem er je tijd voor, laat het rustig binnenkomen en koester het daarna eeuwig in je hart en hoofd. Voedsel voor de ziel. En het is het ideale geschenk voor een dierbare vriend. Fan! (
