This story takes place on the Nebraska Plains in the 1870's. Jude Kingman is part of a wealthy family who own the railroad that is taking the land back that the settlers have moved in to farm. He hates doing it, but his ruthless family doesn't care and sends him to do it anyway. While there Jude will meet Ingrid Svensson and is immediately attracted to her. Ingrid knows he is just doing his job, but forcing the family off their farm is heartbreaking. The town and folks get dangerous as their land is taken from them and as Jude and Ingrid are drawn to each other, they both realize they come from two very opposing backgrounds. It will take a couple of tragic accidents for them to come to terms with loving each other at any cost.

This was a story that had a lot of turmoil and action in it. You finally come to understand why Jude is the unloved son in his family and Ingrid is a great woman who shows Jude what love really looks like. Another good book by this author. ( )

You can always count on a great story by Rosanne Bittner! This story finds you on the Nebraska Plains in the 1870s. Jude Kingman is part of the wealthy family who owns the railroad. He has been sent there to tell the settlers that they either need to pay what they are asking for their land or they have to get off. Jude is not as ruthless as the rest of his family. He knows he has to do this but he is trying to make it as painless as possible and even gave the settlers until after harvest. While down there, he meets Ingrid Svensson. She is about the only one who is not hostile toward him. She knows it's just his job and they become friends. Gradually feelings on both sides begin to change but they decide that He being so wealthy and she begin poor it would never work. Yet each are lost without each other. They can't put the other out of their mind. Will they ever be able to work out that difference? Ingrid was considering marrying another man to help save at least one of their farms. Will she go through with that? This is a really good story and kept me turning pages. It's a keeper for my shelf. ( )
