All three comics included here seem like they could be something quite worthwhile, but there's just not enough of a glimpse of any of them in this single preview issue to know with any certainty.
The preview of "White Ash" explains little to nothing, dropping one directly into a story filed with unclear character motivations and relationships that one does not yet care about. The premise seems to be some kind of immortal Elves conspiracy living hidden from human perception sprinkled over teen romance, but while the artwork's nice and the concept decent enough, I've absolutely no understanding of what it is I'm reading before the sample is finished. I felt like I should have read at least a paperback's worth of issues to follow what I was reading properly.
The "The Game" preview, by the same writer/illustrator team, has the opposite problem: It starts an enticing concept very clearly and succinctly (every action you do in life secretly gets you some kind of point score, positive or negative), and then stops before any story actually gets going. That is probably a better approach than the first preview had, but it's still disappointing -- I'm not shown enough of this to know if the story is one that will be worthy of the premise I'm sold on.
Finally, "Jessamy" (in black and white excepting certain things, like fire and blood, which is coloured) sets up a world in which vampires in the late 1700s are fearing discovery due to some fellow running around the east coast of North America telling tales of plantation owners drinking the blood of their slaves. Title character Jessamy is (reluctantly) sent from vampire ministry headquarters in London to investigate. This preview -- ironically the shorter of the three -- managed what the other two did not, i.e. tell me what the plot would be and also explain the premise sufficiently that I care to continue. I've no relationship to this "Stake" world it's apparently set in, but it appeared well enough executed. Like the other two, though, there's just not enough here for me to get so invested that I'll prioritise pursuing this over any of the other hundreds of interesting looking comics. ( )
