Normally I give most of the books at least 3 stars but this one couldn't hold my interest. Part of it is not the book's fault. Historicals are not my favorite part of the Love Inspired line. But I found the characters uninteresting and the plot not gripping enough for me to be inspired to read it. I finally realized I really was struggling to want to finish the book at all.
Confusion reigns. Luke's "estranged" grandfather dies--yet this "estranged" grandfather had enough of a relationship with Luke's sister to foot the bill for her education at a boarding school--a school he also supported financially.
Luke's mother is dying (Wyoming), but she doesn't want to tell her daughter, doesn't want to take the girl away from school (New York) just to see her mother one last time. Luke, however, as the man, decides that he knows what's best and sets out for New York to not only settle his "estranged" grandfather's estate but to take his sister out of school and bring her home to Wyoming. (How he plans to accomplish this before his mother dies at a time when traversing from New York to Wyoming was not as easy as getting on a plane is not explained--it's basically a way to set up the meeting between Luke and Elizabeth.
It's always a shock to realize how few rights women had in the past. The education of women to this level during this time is unconventional. Women had few occupational options and most were expected to get married and keep house/raise children rather than working outside the home for pay--though some did help supplement the household income by selling eggs or butter or sewing or laundering etc. ( )
