I loved this book for three reasons. First, I liked the author’s writing because it is engaging. Young readers would definitely be charmed by the author’s way of describing characters. In the story, when Agnes asks Gru if he is really going to save the world, Gru “strikes a heroic pose and puts on a pair of cool sunglasses,” replying, “Yes. Yes, I am.” I imagine that young readers would find this specific example of writing to be humorous and captivating. I also loved the characters in this book. I liked the fact that the main character, Gru, was once the most evil villain in the world and is now a loving father to three sweet children. And of course, who does not fall in love with Gru’s army of goofy, impulsive yet adorable and innocent minions? Finally, I liked this book because it included a several illustrations that were shown suitably throughout the book. I especially liked how the author included actual illustrations with color from the movie, “Despicable Me 2” in the middle of the book, with captions to describe each scene. The big idea of this book is to take readers on a fun adventure with Gru and the minions to discover who committed the crime of stealing; readers learn that stealing is unethical. ( )
