This one has all the feels! Pretty hard hitting for a YA book, tackling handicapping injury, addiction, same sex attraction, loss, and more all wrapped up in a double mystery. The mystery wasn't the most astounding, but when coupled with the rest this was a strong piece of fiction (IMO). Would definitely read more by this author. ( )

A powerful, poignant book about loss, sexuality, and addiction. It's heavy but attention-grabbing, in the style of my beloved Laurie Halse Anderson. 4.5 stars. ( )

I'll be buying this for my high school library. It's just the kind of thing my students love to read:
murder mystery, drama, emotional, with some drug issues tossed in for good measure.

Thanks NetGalley for letting me read it early.

I did buy it and got a bit more than I expected when I finished it. I didn't figure out the bad guy, it was kind of out of left field for me, but whatever, that wasn't the big emotional investment that Mina and Sophie's relationship was. ( )

I am so mad that I did not like this book as much as I probably should. To read a young adult novel where the main character is a bisexual teenage girl still trying to move past being crippled at an early age (still with scars and a limp) which led to her being hooked on prescription meds would have been the best book. Unfortunately Ms. Sharpe adds in a murder mystery (two of them) and I found myself not at all engaged every time the book switched from the main character's past memories of her best friend and/or her present trying to just get on with her life with old/new friends.

The main character is Sophie. Sophie we find was sent away to a rehab facility for a couple of months after her parents wrongly believe she fell off the wagon and went to get drugs with her best friend Mina. Everyone in her small town believes that a drug dealer killed Mina and left Sophie for dead. However, Sophie knows the truth. That the person who killed Mina wanted her dead and planted evidence on Sophie to make it appear to be her fault. Now that Sophie is back in town she plans on tracking down Mina's murderer.

So read my first two paragraphs again. Reads like two totally different books yes? And that was my huge problem with this book. That and the relationship between Sophie and Mina.

Sophie's voice in this book is quite strong. She is blunt (to the point of rudeness) and we find that part of her wants things to either go back to the way they were before Mina died, or that in some small way that Mina had stopped jerking her around when it came to their relationship with one another. There are not a lot of YA books out there that handle young men/women who are bisexual very well. I thought that Ms. Sharpe did though in this book. I was able to see how Sophie could love Mina and also could be with other people (teenage boys). does handle it very well and through reading this story and listening to Sophie's voice we come to find out how hard things have been with her through the past couple of years after realizing that she likes both women and men. And in her case, she went and fell in love with her best friend.

Onto the character of Mina. We only get to know her through flashbacks from Sophie's point of view, however, I ended up just chalking her up to being extremely selfish. We find that pretty much every aspect of Sophie and Mina's relationship/friendship was on Mina's terms. There were some parts of the story that you do see how much Mina did care about Sophie. However, how she manipulated and forced Sophie to do things and/or involved other people with their subterfuge I had a harder time with.

There were other characters in this book which were not as well drawn as Sophie and Mina. We have Sophie's unexpected friend Rachel (a girl that helps Sophie after Mina's murder) and she read like a manic pixie girl throughout the entire book. I don't like to watch movies let alone read books with a characters like these so she just aggravated me every time she was on the scene so to speak.

The writing read as as a typical teenage girl with Sophie describing the times before her accident, after her accident, before Mina's murder and after Mina's murder. The chapter headings give readers a heads-up of the time period so that did help. A few times though I thought that Sophie sounded way older than she was in a few parts. And since she was addicted to prescription pain meds it was very weird how she became some addict savant regarding other people's addictions in this book. The pacing was really not that great in this book I have to say. I think it was due to the book going back to the present, past, further past, and furthest past all of the time. I don't need to read a book in chronological order, but it would have been great to not keep getting reader whip lash constantly.

The setting of Sophie's small town felt like a real small town to me. However, the way the book set things up the population of this place had to be pretty minuscule since we never read about that many people besides a few here and there.

The ending which was just about Mina's murderer reveal was pretty anti-climatic. I did just say to myself, really and moved on from it. The bigger point of this story to me was Sophie learning to get on in a world without Mina and what that means for her future. It would be nice to read a follow-up concerning Sophie just to see what path she chooses. ( )

Holy fucking shit I need some time to process this. It was... amazing. Spectacular. It made me cry so hard. It blew me away.

I don't even know how to review this, but it was a masterpiece. ( )
