Hello, Queery readers!

I want to let you know I'm the replacement administrator. You can see what site features comes along with that role by going to the New Features group message, "Admin/moderation features complete". The LibraryThing team gave us a bunch of new tools to use for group management.

Most of those tools are meant for other groups, really. I expect I'll be sitting around with this group open as I wonder what members secretly would like to discuss.

Feel free to post in the group or to send me a direct message if you would like a new topic or have any questions.

>1 aspirit: Hi, I only discovered this group when Tim mentioned it as one that might need an admin. Glad you accepted that challenge.

ETA : I'm generally more a non-fiction reader. And discussions and recommendations on Queer fiction are interesting for me too - if only because I don't know a whole lot about that. But that's why I didn't step up.

>2 Nicole_VanK: Welcome!

Most of the books I read are fiction, but this group is officially (as of now at least) for both! I would love for you to see your thoughts about Queer nonfiction here.

just saying, to maybe get some life in the group or just to get some conversations going, we could have trop or genre book suggestions? Like make May an enemies to lovers trope, and we all just chime in with our favorites or book titles that fit that topic. Wouldn't need a lot of work and it'd help us all find a little more queer reading material? Just a thought? I know I'll probably asking for suggestions semi regularly... I read something like 3-5 books in a week minimum and I'm constantly needing new titles to search for on Libby and Hoopla.

Cool idea!

Some possible tropes:
Coffee shops
Biographies
Medical stories
Bonding over kids
Science fiction
Fake dating
Queer histories (nonfiction)
Friends to lovers
Procedurals (police, detectives, mysteries)
Vampires and other immortals
Historical fiction
Reality TV riffs
Sports stories
Fantasy
Fanfic with the serial numbers filed off

And if you haven't chimed in on what I guess is before the fact April Trope post, come tell us your favorite Actor stories:

>5 Aquila: what is a fanfic with the serial numbers filed off?

50 Shades of Grey

Something that was written for fandom, but then changed so that it could be published without breaking copyright. Made easier by the tendency of fandom to drift towards writing AUs (alternative universes) about the same characters in completely different universes (what if they ran a coffee shop together).

Xena fandom used to call their AUs Ubers and gave the characters new names anyway, so they were particularly easy to then publish - every second lesbian romance published in the early 2000s had tall dark and dangerous paired with short blonde and chatty.

The Devil Wears Prada "inspired" books are often easy to recognise, but you get them for all sorts of fandoms.

From memory Backwards to Orgeon counts, as does The Brutal Truth.

>7 Aquila: I didn’t realize backwards to Oregon was formerly a fanfic

>7 Aquila: There are now a bunch of other fandoms that have these sort of Uber Fics (ah, Xena Fanfic, those were the days)

Once Upon a Time (the TV show) has quite a few, Flight SQA016 being a well known one, as well as Popcorn Love Both published by Ylva Publishing.

And The 100 has a few as well if I recall (but can't retrieve them off the top of my head).

>8 MiserableFlower: I don't think that Backwards to Oregon was ever actually a fanfic?? (i.e. free online on a Geocities or wherever back in the day). I could be wrong. A lot of the later Uber Xena Fics never used the names Xena or Gabrielle, and a lot of the AU fanfics these days simply start with different names too.

>9 DanieXJ: Yep, I just looked at a ballet romance that sounded familiar, wondered if it was Swanqueen or Supercat, glanced through the first chapter sample and was "yep, definitely Supercat, I remember reading this. Will read more books by the author."

Yeah, I just looked and Backwards to Oregon isn't indexed in the Academy's Uberlist, so I guess it wasn't. There is a review of it on the Athenaeum, but it seems to be for the published book, that may be what tripped me up. That review does have snippets of comments with people looking forwards to updates, so maybe it was originally shared on an email list.

Edit: Just thought to search my email, and found update emails from 2007 of it being in parts on both The Academy of Bards and Ralst's Passion and Perfection website. Ralst had listed it as Original, which was happening more and more around then as authors who started in fanfic wrote their original characters for the same audiences. Still does.
