2022 movie #188. 2021. A group of people visit a tropical, and hard to reach, beach and find they start to age quickly. Typical twisted Shyamalan kind of ending. It was OK

A huge fan of the movie. This book could be a great introduction to the movie for kids. Illustrations are beautiful and text is from the movie or the movie is from this book. May not be exciting for those who do not care for this story, movie, etc. Great backyard fairytale for anyone with a lawn, a pool, and trees.

A comic book fan tries to convince someone he has super powers.

2.5/4 (Okay).

This is an extremely corny movie, and it has no idea.

This is an unexpectedly interesting layperson's look at the problems of K-12 education (though I say "layperson," Shyamalan certainly has the resources to conduct a higher level of research than the average person -- and puts those resources to use throughout his exploration). Although my particular area of interest is at the college level, it's certainly worthwhile to take a look at what factors are influencing children's education before they reach higher education.

The is a beautiful book. The story is quite engaging and the illustrations and wonderful. I think what I like the most is that the story is inspirational without being preachy in any way.

Not as good as the animated tv serial, because of the compression of the story-line, but okay.

Most of what this movie does is *literally* vilify people with dissociative identity disorder. I couldn't get past that. There are some atmospheric bits, and McAvoy’s performance(s) are good, but this was a thoroughly disappointing film. Just a bad idea.½

The pacing hurts it a good bit, but it's beautifully acted and plotted, and holds up twenty years later.

First saw this alone at work on the grave shift, and it scared the crap out of me. The "everything makes sense" ending seems more contrived than Sixth Sense, but it's still fun. Can't figure out what the hell happened to the director after this.

World class suspense about a kid who sees dead people...and they don't know they're dead. The ending is all the more shocking because it makes perfect sense.

After being shot by a former patient, a child psychologist tries to help a new kid with a similar problem.

Extremely well-made and constantly engrossing. This is how to do a story with a twist ending: make the whole movie so compelling that it doesn't need the twist. Too bad Shyamalan didn't have any more movies in him.½

Full disclosure: I loved the film, Lady in the Water. I know, I know, everyone else hated it. Not me. But then again I've enjoyed every film Shyamalan has written AND directed through 2008. After that, well, The Last Airbender - need I say more? Anywho, I loved the film inspired by this story, which he first told to his kids before pursuing it for the screen; thus, I fully expected to love this book just as much.

While the story was as good as the movie, the illustrations, or lack thereof was mind boggling. SO much white space. SO many pages with about an inch of black text drowning in nothing but blank page. Why create an illustrated children's book if only 28% of its pages will feature a picture? It seems like a waste of glossy, probably really expensive paper. I will add, though, the 18 illustrations were PERFECT for the story.

I was conflicted about my rating. On the one hand, I loved the story; on the other, I was extremely disappointed about the lack of illustrations. In the end, I referred to my own personal rating system and settled where I did:

2.5 stars½

Title of the Film / Major Stars
She’s All That/Freddie Prinze, Jr. & Rachel Leigh Cook

Themes:
Senior Year, Single Parent Family, Relationships

Age / Grade Appropriateness:
17 and above

Censorship Issues (are there any elements of this film that might make it unsuited for classroom use):
I would not suggest having this movie shown in the classroom. There is a lot of foul language and sexual content. The message is a good one, but not for the classroom.

Plot Summary (Summarize the plot in 250 words or less):
Zach, the most popular senior in his class, has just been dumped by his longtime girlfriend. He is persuaded by close friends to accept a bet that he can make any girl homecoming queen just by becoming their close companion. The girl that is chosen is not as popular and is more concerned with the Earth and the arts, then her friends or the prom. He is faced with problems when he begins to have true feelings for her. He finds along the way that what is seen on the outside of a person does not always reflect what is on the inside. She also has an awakening and realizes that she needs to live her teenage years out as a teenager and not as a parent yet. Feelings get hurt, but overall great lessons are learned.

Critique (Consider if the movie fits what we have discussed as good YA books. Although it’s a movie, some of the same principles apply. Include your opinion of the movie here as well):
The characters are age appropriate for the young adult audience. The problems that they are faced with are very real and believable. The setting of the movie takes place at a high school. They have parties at houses where parents are absent, they go out to places such as the beach and the mall, and one other major scene happens at prom. These places are all familiar to a teenager at this age.

Curriculum Uses (Possible uses in the classroom / school library / public library):
This movie can be compared to books with the same plot and themes. It could also be used to help students who have lost a parent and are struggling to act their age, and not as a parent or adult. Great lessons on self-worth and honesty.
