Evelyn Hooker had an opportunity to pursue her education, unusual for a poor girl of her time (1920s). She had all these interesting connections to points of history that influenced the trajectory her career like trying to go to college right when the 19th amendment had been ratified, she was studying in Berlin during Kristallnacht, asking for grants for her groundbreaking study from the NIH during the Mccarthy era. Hooker's groundbreaking research compared results of gay men and straight men taking Rorschach tests and two other major psychological indicators. After scoring the tests, she got cross coders to score that were experts on those tests and they found no difference between those who were gay and those who were straight. This set the groundwork for removing homosexuality as a psychological condition and getting it removed from the DSM. Her findings help fuel research behind the gay rights movements.
Poems pepper the text.
A fascinating life, a readable story.

This simple, lyrical story celebrates a Sunday morning at an inclusive church that embraces all people regardless of age, class, race, gender identity, and sexual orientation. All are welcome at the church for all!

Being in my 30's with no young children in the house I am not exactly up to date on the latest childrens books. I happened upon the title of this book as I was researching recently banned books and as soon as I saw the reasoning I ran to the library and checked it out. This is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL book celebrating inclusion and love for everyone, exactly what we need in this world, and exactly what we're missing. I am appalled that parents could possibly try to ban a book that depicts individuals and couples in every shape and form. Whatever your personal beliefs, this book should be on your shelf as a member of the human race, as a person with half a heart

KUDOS to Gayle E. Pitman. Thank you thank you thank you for this book!

I love that Gayle Pitman and Laure Fournier have teamed up again -- This Day in June is one of my favorites. This picture book is similarly full of lovely, intricate, inclusive drawings, but I think the rhymes suffer a bit, and it didn't quite feel as fully realized as the last book. Still, I like any positive message about religion and diversity not necessarily being mutually exclusive.

Finally a fantastic picture book about the Pride parade! SO lovely, brightly colored, simple enough for even the youngest kids, but with intricate illustrations that engage the older ones. YES.

“This Day In June” by Gayle E. Pitman, illustrated by Kristyna Litten is a book that encourages and supports excitement, acceptance and acknowledgment for all people – gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and allies, alike. It’s written with simple text and robust imagery – each page aligning in color scheme to know unity, and equality throughout the book. It’s approachable for young children and adults alike. This book allows for children to see mirrors of themselves, or their family members as well as windows – to a world of people who may live differently than they do, but are celebrating their love and joy! The Reading Guide and Note to Parents/Caregivers at the end of “This Day In June” is a fantastic and supportive section and one I found important to read and understand what would be most appropriate to share with children of different ages. This book won the 2015 Stonewall Book Award, and was a 2015 Notable Books for a Global Society Award, along with many others. One quote I loved was “All Invited, all excited” to show the inclusive nature of both pride and this book.

It is a whimsical story that shows the acceptance and celebration of the LGBTQ community. This is a good story for students to read when they are struggling with coming out about their identity to show them that there are people like them.

This book introduces LGBTQ and the pride that takes part in it. I loved the illustrations and raw representation of this community. This is an incredible book that should be introduced to children at a young age because they are very aware of the world around them. We need to be able to feel comfortable and discuss such topics. I am becoming more familiar with the community each and everyday. I really enjoyed this simple picture book that portrays a strong message.

The true story of the people who sewed up the first rainbow flags for San Francisco's Gay Pride Parade. This flag has become a worldwide symbol for gay pride.

diverse picture book (ages 3 , schoolage; LGBTQA community).
* Prominently features diverse characters: mostly in terms of LGBTQIA, but also ethnically diverse. The author is a professor of psych and women's studies, and "has worked extensively with the ... LGBT community."
* Works for preschool storytime: I probably wouldn't read this at a toddler storytime, even though the text is short, because without the context I don't know that they would understand a whole lot, and they can't articulate questions the way a preschooler can, but the book includes background info and tips for introducing some of the topics to 3-5 year olds, as well as to 6-12 year olds and 13-18 year olds. It would totally work for a preschool storytime, but the presenter should be prepared to be able to answer the kids' questions afterwards.
* Book works well with the community theme: yes, though this theme is pretty loose to begin with.

The Stonewall Uprising included a series of protests by the gay community in the summer of 1969 after a police raid in New York City. Many historians consider this event to have sparked the LGBTQ+ movement that continues today.

Read the recently published middle grades children's book, then learn more at the website:

THE STONEWALL RIOTS: COMING OUT IN THE STREETS by Gayle E. Pitman tells the story of the 1969 demonstrations that launched the LGBTQ+ movement.

Visit the Stonewall National Monument National Park Service website to learn about the site of the Stonewall protests. The website contains a history of the events and connections to the people, parks, and places associated with LGBTQ heritage.

This Day in June introduces children to the joyous exuberance of a pride parade, where “we’re all united.” A Reading Guide at the back offers age-appropriate tips to parents for discussing LGBTQIA+ issues with children.

The rhyming couplets and colorful pictures in this book are sure to please little readers (or listeners, as the case may be). The parade is full of colorful characters, some in fancy dress, others in outfits that can be found at a Village People concert, but all happy and excited to be a part of this celebration. The illustrator chose to keep the observers in muted colors to focus attention on the parade itself, but a close look shows them holding positive signs such as “I love my dads,” “Born this way,” or “Pride.” Same-sex couples occasionally share a chaste kiss or hold hands in this celebration of love in all its forms. I love that participants and parade marchers alike present a racially-diverse crowd as well.

I don’t have children but this seems like an excellent tool for heterosexual parents to introduce the little crowd to the LGBTQIA+ community and open the doors for honest questions and discussion. I even found the Reader’s Guide at the end to be informative (I didn’t know that lesbians and gay men had to wear arm bands with black or pink triangles, respectively, in WWII concentration camps). The page-by-page breakdown explains each line of the text as well as any illustrations that are particularly meaningful.

I recommend this for any parent who wants to foster acceptance, love, and a broader sense of community in their young children but who might not know where to begin this particular conversation.

Ages: 2-6

Picture book with very short rhyming phrases on each double page spread. End notes about each spread shared lots of factual information about the topic covered.

The illustrations are fun to explore with so many people to look at.

Easy to understand history of LGBTQ+ past and struggle to gain rights and equality. I liked that the book used photos and items from the times and explained how they were used in the fight or oppression of homosexuals. I also liked that there were explanations of what life was like for them and how homosexuals started to organize and stand up to the police. There is a bit of humor as she explains the kick lines. I can picture that in my mind. I appreciated that she did not whitewash how society treated and abused gays, lesbians, and transgendered people. Nor did she deny that there were divisions amongst the different groups trying to get their rights and equality for homosexuals. This is good start for 10 & up to understand the LGBTQ+ fight and how far they have come.

I thought that this story was a cute read for young students. The overall message promotes positivity and togetherness and has short, to the point sentences which makes it easy for students to understand the message. I also thought that the illustrations were great. Each page was fully filled with illustrations and they were very colorful and went perfectly with the story. Additionally, each sentence rhymed throughout the book which made it fun to read.

***History of the Stonewall riots organized by objects that you might see in a museum…signs, leaflets, photographs, etc. Includes index and extensive bibliography. I was distracted by a photo on page 25 labeled Fred Kameny but the accompanying article talks about Frank Kameny…there was no mention of Fred…a typo?

I read this book when looking into LGBTQ books. I was okay reading this book because it did not mention anyone specially but it also made me feel like it was a great book to read for them to feel like they are welcome

This is one of the only books that I have found so far that does a great job representing Pride in a variety of perspectives for emergent readers. Each page is filled with various colorful representations of LGBT+ community and ways those a part of the community express themselves. The glossary in the back explains the vocabulary readers are exposed to in the book. This book is a great tool to introducing students to the concepts of books, how to read books, and resources some books have to help readers comprehend (the glossary), and introduce the LGBT+ community in a light hearted atmosphere.

This Day in June, written by Gayle E. Pitman, Ph.D., a professor of psychology, won the 2015 Stonewall Book Award - Mike Morgan & Larry Romans Children’s & Young Adult Literature Award, given annually to "English-language works of exceptional merit for children or teens relating to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender experience.' This was the first time in the award's 44-year-history that a picture book won (or was even named an honor book).

The book portrays the sights, sounds, and emotions of a colorful gay pride parade with short rhyming text and intricate illustrations by Kristyna Litten. Young children who look at this book will see a fun parade; older children and parents will see some of the subtler messages in the shirts and signs of parade participants and watchers (the latter generally rendered in simple outlines and pastels). Pitman also included an interesting four-page reading guide that provides more background for the images in each of the double-page-spread illustrations, as well as a four-page "note to parents and caregivers" with ideas on using the book and talking to children of various ages about the issues it might bring up. I would definitely recommend this book.

How can I not love this book. It literally has a glittery, sparkling rainbow flag on the front and back covers. It was bound to be fabulous, as the word used in the book indicates. I met the author of this book and so it made it a little more important to read and to understand the meaning behind it. It isn't so much that it's a 'feel good' book, just that it's a celebration of being who you are, being proud, and the man who created an iconic and glorious modern 'freedom' flag. As George Takei states: It's Okay to be Takei!

This is the story of how the rainbow flag came to symbolize the LGBTQ community. Gilbert was born at a time that gay people were not shown tolerance, luckily he landed in a city that did. He was a friend to Harvey Milk and helped create the universal symbol of Gay pride.
