Lyhyt elämäkerta
Margaret Peterson Haddix (born April 9, 1964) is an American writer known best for the two children's series, Shadow Children (1998–2006) and The Missing (2008–2015). She also wrote the tenth volume in The 39 Clues, published by Scholastic.

Haddix grew up on a farm about halfway between two small towns: Washington Court House, Ohio, and Sabina, Ohio. Her family was predominantly farmers and she grew up in a family of voracious readers. Some of her favorite books growing up included E.L. Konigsburg books, Harriet the Spy, Anne of Green Gables, Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, Anne Frank, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, and The Little Princess.

She graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio with degrees in English/journalism, English/Creative writing, and History. While in college, Haddix worked a series of jobs. She was an assistant cook at a 4-H camp, but almost every other job has been related to writing. During college, she worked on the school newspaper and had summer internships at newspapers in Urbana, Ohio; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Indianapolis, Indiana.

Haddix chose to pursue fiction writing after her husband, Doug, became a news reporter, because she did not want to be his employee. Her previous work as a reporter inspired her to write fiction. After documenting a wide variety of topics, she wanted to create her own plots and characters. Haddix experienced a long period of having her writing rejected by publishers before her first two books were accepted in 1995 and 1996. Her first book was Running Out of Time, published when Haddix was pregnant with her second child, and her first child was one and a half years old. Her second book, Don't You Dare Read This, Mrs. Dunphrey, followed shortly after. The Summer of Broken Things, written in 2018, is Haddix’s most recently published stand-alone book.

Haddix has written more than 30 books for children and teenagers, including Running Out of Time, Don't You Dare Read This, Mrs. Dunphrey, Leaving Fishers, Just Ella, Turnabout, Takeoffs and Landings, The Girl with 500 Middle Names, Because of Anya, Escape from Memory, Say What?, The House on the Gulf, Double Identity, Dexter the Tough, Uprising, Palace of Mirrors, Claim to Fame, The Always War, Game Changer, the Shadow Children series, and the Missing series. She also wrote Into the Gauntlet, book 10 in The 39 Clues series. Her books have made New York Times Best Seller lists and American Library Association (ALA) annual book lists and they have won the International Reading Association's Children's Book Award and more than a dozen state reader's choice awards.

The New York Times’ best-selling author currently lives in Columbus, Ohio with her husband, Doug, and their two children, Meredith and Connor.

Haddix has received the International Reading Association Children's Book Award, Champions league, some ALA listings on Best Books for Young Adults and Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers, The National Kids Award, and readers' choice lists in more than 29 states.

Uprising by Margaret Peterson Haddix is a fictionalized account of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, The story has three main characters Bella, Yetta and Jane and through their eyes we are able to explore the general strike that occurred the previous year to the fire, what the workers were fighting for and why they weren’t granted their demands. The story also touches on class privilege, immigration, feminism and still manages to be compelling and interesting.

Two of the main characters, Bella and Yetta were employed at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory while the third, Jane, was a runaway daughter of a wealthy businessman. She lived with Bella and Yetta and worked as the governess to the two daughters of one of the owners of the factory. On the day of the fire, March 25, 1911, Bella and Yetta are at work and Jane has brought her charges to visit their father at work. The fire begins on the 8th floor where Yetta works and quickly spreads to the 9th and 10th floors where Bella and Jane are. From the beginning of the book, you are informed that only one of three friends will survive.

One of the worst workplace disasters in history, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire claimed the lives of 146 workers. Although there was no safety plans, the fire escape collapsed, and exit stairways were locked, the owners were granted a “no-fault” insurance claim of more than sixty thousand dollars which enabled them to reopen their factory and once again exploit young immigrant girls. Recognized unions and workplace reforms took another decade to be put in place. I found Uprising to be a very good read. The author was able to describe the horrific conditions of the workplace as well as giving the reader a clear picture of how the immigrant workforce lived in the early 20th century.

This was a very unique book. I didn't anticipate the plot twist and I haven't read a book with this type of plot before. Each chapter was written from the point of view of one of the three children but still written in the third person which I liked. I liked the mystery aspect of the book and it really kept me interested as I tried to figure out what was going on. The end of the book was unresolved but now that I know what's going on I don't know if I'm interested enough to read the second book. I liked the different characters for the most part although something about Ms. Morales felt a bit off.
There was no profanity or blasphemy.

Okay so I could NOT put this book down! I loved the descriptions of the world in 2193 and found it super interesting. I was so invested in the lives of Zola and Puck and really wanted to find out what happened. That said, the writing was not good. I still was really invested in the story but I cringed so many times at the writing. The conversations between characters felt forced and stilted and I get that some of that may have been the situation they found themselves in but it just didn't feel natural for that situation. If you can get past that it's a really interesting plot.
I also thought how things resolved in the end didn't really flow well.
I don't recall if there was profanity but I also read it very quickly because I wanted to find out what happened so I wasn't paying as much attention as I usually do.

This book is about two 12 year old kids - Colin and Nevaeh. They don't know each other but they live in a fairly small town and their parents both do a type of junk removal/organization for people and Colin's mom and Nevaeh's dad don't like each other. Colin finds a shoebox full of letters in one of the homes he's helping clean and through that ends up meeting Nevaeh and they try to figure out who the letters belonged to. The chapters go back and forth between Colin and Nevaeh's points of view.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the mystery that they were trying to solve and trying to figure out what happened to these two people that wrote the letters.
I thought the characters of Colin and Nevaeh were really well developed. They were very relatable and the author did a great job of showing their internal thoughts and doubts and insecurities. I really liked how Colin sees the beauty in old things and sees them in a different way. At one point Colin sees a suncatcher "...It was a flower suncatcher that had been hanging in a window for so long that almost all the color had bleached out of it - it was a suncatcher destroyed by the sun."
I would highly recommend this book.
