I honestly can’t remember the last time I read a play outside of work (as an english teacher). But after reading this I’m convinced that it’s a genre, like dark poetry, that needs more mainstream attention in the horror world! Here the author does a great job of blending mystery, suspense, and character drama in a way that I really enjoyed. I found the characters and their marital conflict pretty relatable. I’m not a vlogger (yet?), but the issues of followers vs family and misplaced priorities has certainly come up in my own life

I also love the paired down nature of the story: very few set changes and essentially only two characters on stage. It forces the drama to turn inward in much the same way as a Carver or Chekov short story, relying on strong characterization and dialogue to drive the story. Luckily all of these things deliver, along with one genuinely disturbing moment and a lot of tension. I’ve gotten greedy for bigger twists in horror, and that’s one area I felt shortchanged (that and I really want to know more about The Boxer). But overall if you’re looking for a dark little morality play then this is for you!

I really wanted to like this. Queer witches in a boarding school is right up my alley.

Unfortunately there were quite a few continuity errors / plotholes that I just couldn't get over (as well as some grammatical errors).
The characters were very likeable and diverse but also naive and oblivious.
At points the scenes didn't seem to flow naturally. Characters would start an action, be interrupted by something that would normally not be an issue, and then wait literal minutes (yes that's what the book said) to try again. In a life or death situation.
I also don't like the fact that one specific situation that would have drastic results on one person never really got addressed, it got completely sweeped under the rug.

I also don't really get why they would continue to use magic in unnecessary situations when the magic rebound is inevitable.… (lisätietoja)

I have read a few books in play format. They are unique and can add an element to a story. I was drawn to this book first by the book cover and second by the concept of the story. I got both the audio and ebook versions of this book. Which I started out with the audio version.

When I got to the halfway point of the audio book, I realized that I could not remember a thing that had happened. Therefore, I read the ebook as I thought maybe it was the narrator that might have been the issue. No, it was not the narrator.

Both Alice and Greg were not very likable. Greg more than Alice. The events that transpired after Greg opened the mystery box were not goosebump worthy to me. In fact, I found myself at times re-reading passages as I was like that is it. Overall, I liked the concept and the play format but not very scary to me.… (lisätietoja)
