Matusow was a paid witness for McCarthy and the FBI who later recanted his testimony with this book. He spent a few years in prison for perjury, not for admitting the lies, but because they believed he was lying in the book! He spent the rest of his life paying for his youthful mistakes, ran soup kitchens, homeless shelters, communes and made radio and TV shows. He was a strange and interesting character who I was happy to know as a friend in his later years.

There's a book by the publisher of this one that covers the process of publishing the book and the hearings that tried to suppress it. Another book in my library covers Matusow from a critical perspective as seen from the context of the 21st century looking back on those events.
