The problem with being an historical autodidact, is that one has a patchy overview of history. I was born, and educated, in Leicester and so, came up against Simon de Montfort on a regular basis. For reasons best known to educationalists of that bygone era, Simon was not considered for the curriculum. I have failed, until now, to fill this particular gap in my knowledge.

This book is exactly what I required; in a mere 160 pages, the author sets the scene, explaining the state of England and why de Montfort felt the need to challenge royal rule. One gets a good picture of the man, his family and the political intrigues of the day. The book is easy to read, without becoming childish. I would not think that it would be of great value to an expert in this period of history but if, like me, you have an embarrassing gap which you wish to close, then read this book.… (lisätietoja)
