In this first book of the series, Celia is bored until her father asks her to do something for him that leads her into many adventures. She makes a new friend and the two families get together for dinner.

I liked this story as the children are from two different racial backgrounds. There is no racism here. The pictures are sharp and colourful and while the story explains some of the big words it uses such as nutritionist, it does not “talk down” to children.

I think this would be a good book to use in the classroom or in a homeschooling situation where the teacher wanted to teach about nutrition. I also liked that the book includes the recipes for the Amazing Apple Cake. There were 3 versions in this book.

I had my test baker make two of them – the gluten-free variety and the paleo version. They really were amazingly delicious! We found the paleo version somewhat crumbly, but it was tasty nonetheless. The third version of the recipe which we will try at some point can be made from spelt, kamut or whole wheat flour.

Celia and Cedric: Amazing Apples also had a Nutrition Notes page where they explained why apples are nutritious for you. I liked that this book is about helping stretch children’s imaginations in having fun, and teaching them about cooking and eating nutritious food, especially if you are on a gluten-free or paleo diet.

Celia and Cedric: Amazing Apples will make a great book for reading with your child or as your child gets older for reading on his/her own. I would highly recommend this book to add to your home/school library. I have this book 5 stars out of 5.

Celia and Cedric are on another adventure. This time a little green dragon is chasing them about from here to there. Celia’s mother calls them in to take a break and make a yummy snack to revive them from all their exertion after running from the dragon.

The two children make a power smoothie filled with healthy food choices such as bananas and frozen mangos. Super foods such as chia seeds can be added. For the liquid water, coconut, almond or other milk of your choice can be used. The special ingredient for this smoothie is romaine lettuce or spinach. This gives the drink a beautiful green colour.

Celia and Cedric pretend that the drink is the little green dragon….

I liked this story and the recipe because they are tied together and can help children further their imaginations. I did not test the recipe in this book but the other recipes that I have tested by these authors have been excellent, so I have no doubt that this one will be just as tasty and easy for youngsters to make with a little parent supervision.

The pictures in the book are bright and clear and the dragon can be found on each page hiding behind something, so for very young children if you are reading the book to them, they will enjoy searching the page for the dragon.

I think young children will enjoy this book and all children will enjoy the healthy snack. I gave this book 5 stars out of 5.

After the rain, everything is muddy and wet outside, but that doesn’t stop Celia and Cedric from going outside and having some fun. They decide to create something for a snack shop. They end up with dirt balls. When Celia’s mom sees what they have created, she invites them inside to make some dirt balls they can really eat.

I had my test baker follow the recipe at the back of the book to create some of these dirt balls. They were very good. I did find them a little sweet however, but we did add the optional cranberries to the recipe. The recipe was easy to make – just dump all the ingredients into the bowl and mix, then form into balls and roll in coconut. We ended up with about 38 of them.

I like that the story is fun, yet helps the child to learn about friendships, working together, and problem solving. There is a “Nutrition Notes” page at the back of the book that explains why a certain ingredient has been added to the recipe.

Celia and Cedric: Eat Dirt Balls is a great book for young children and I would highly recommend it. I give it 5 stars out of 5.
