Claire has just lost her husband and is invited by a university friend to come help on an archaeological dig. Claire is an archaeologist and welcomes the chance to get away and try to forget things for a while. They are taking over a site that was excavated in the early 70s, but nothing was written about it; the archaeologist in charge (and the man who owns the land) has just passed away. Initially, Claire and David find that an artifact has gone missing. It’s not long after that that they discover that there also seems to have been a murder somewhere along the way!

It was good, but a bit slow to get started. I guess the author was trying to get all the background information in before bringing in the mystery. I enjoyed the characters and, as this is meant to be the first in a series featuring Claire, I’m interested in continuing.

This is a murder mystery set in the world of British archaeology. Clare is contracted to catalog a recently deceased archaeologists previously unknown material related to a major ‘dig’ in the Marlborough Downs. She discovers a discrepancy in the records showing a valuable find is missing and uncovering a long passed murder. As she becomes more involved in unravelling this mystery further murder in committed and accidents begin to happen.

Nicola Ford, pen name of a real-life archaeologist, brings lots of experience and verisimilitude to both the ‘dig’ action and the painstaking administration and research that goes on in the background, along with academic politics and the ‘characters’ attracted to arcane disciplines in universities.

The mystery here is quite complicated and sometimes difficult to follow - you have to keep your wits about you at all times. The threat is always well maintained and the false trails are many and convincing, although I did spot the killer a few pages before the big reveal.

Where this book left me a little flat was in the motivation for the crimes. Ultimately, this is down to the ageless attachment of communities to the land, but the tension between ‘locals’ and ‘incomers’ is not made clear enough to provide the right level of shock value in the end.

A good story, generally well told, that falls a bit flat in the final straight.
