Really enjoyable and informative! This is an excellent balance of memoir and a peek at the "death industry," along with how people's relationship/understanding of death is skewed.
I'm not sure it's changed my views or understanding, but it might for many, depending on your experiences with funerals and burial.

If anything about Death intrigues you, or if you have any queries about cremations or decomposition or funny doubts about what happens if an astronaut dies in space or if you die when you are eating or how corpses smell, this is the book for you!

A beautifully enlightening book replete with great examples and tongue-in-cheek humour, it deserves an audience. Caitlin Doughty, the author, is a mortician in real life and she puts her experience and knowledge to good use. As she says in the introduction, "We can’t make death fun, but we can make learning about death fun. Death is science and history, art and literature. It bridges every culture and unites the whole of humanity."

I never thought I'd enjoy any book about such a morbid topic so much.

Just in case the title makes you squeamish, keep in mind the tagline: "big questions from tiny mortals.' The entire book is in Q&A format, with the author answering questions actually put to her by children. The questions are varied; the answers are always genuine with the perfect touch of humour to relax children and satisfy their curiosity.

Death as a topic is hardly ever popular but Caitlin Doughty, as always, brings forth her effortless humour and genuine insight to make the morbid topic enjoyable and enlightening. This book takes an interesting look at offbeat death-related cultures and rituals around the world. The book covers the obscure rituals from Indonesia, Mexico, Japan, Bolivia and even the USA and India. Unlike many Americans who consider their way of functioning the best and look down on other cultures, Doughty is respectful and looks at the reasoning behind others' preferred rituals instead of demeaning any part of the process.

In a day and age where urban Indians sadly know more about Halloween than our own festivals, such books are a welcome attempt to reveal the not-so-popular unique rituals related to our journey beyond the bodily shell. This was a nice, informative, and fun read, in spite of the gruesome topic.

This is the second book I have listened to by the author. She narrates the books herself and I will say is an incredible story teller. The first part of the book at West Wind was 5 stars for me. There was a bit more ‘ew’ factor in this book than in Eternity but the information and stories were just fascinating. Both of these books were thoroughly enjoyed and have given me a lot to think about.
