the audio version is terrible! It sounded like the narrator was reading a list of discrete facts, rather than a life story.

This book has to be read to be believed. The author (who was a self-styled expert on crime, doubling in brass as a PR man for the Ringling Circus) goes into the evils and perils of marihuana (sic), jitterbugging, white slavery, roadhouses, bootlegging, civic corruption, and what have you. If you ever wondered if "Reefer Madness" was sui generis, here's your answer. The book is rife with possibly-true-but-names-are-changed details to lend that little bit of (alleged) authenticity to the work. Oh, yes, and the author's pal J. Edgar Hoover makes an appearance at the start of the book. It has it all. If you're looking for that certain something about paranoia, that is.

Loved it - good story, the author clearly loved Annie Oakley and everything about her, narrator (audiobook) was great. All good, read it!
