It is so difficult to find literature on the experience of being a homicide survivor. The isolation from society and friends who can't even begin to understand the complicated grieving of a homicide survivor. Homicide bereavement is unique and the homicide survivor will forever have the lens of the violence that was done to their loved one. We never forget or get over it; it becomes a part of us. We have constant reminders of the violence as we navigate the the criminal justice system for which murder is a crime against the state and not against our loved one. The victim and survivors are all but forgotten in the judicial process. Bucholz's book relies on her academic research and personal experience of being a homicide survivors and it does read as an academic work but is still accessible to readers of all types.

I recommend this book to homicide survivors and those who desire to understand the experience of a homicide survivor.
