I was intrigued by the story of these creators of so many popular songs, but found the style too choppy and disconnected, almost like reading an unedited diary with conversations thrown in. ( ) This book is the story of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and their partnership that was begun when they were teenagers and continues through today. The two men alternate entries, some short, some long -just as if they were telling the story to you the listener. David Ritz, their co-writer, has done an excellent job helping with the pace and the level of detail - just enough to add color and life but not enough to drag. Their story seems open and honest - both about their strengths and foibles and their opinions of others. They have been extremely successful both professionally and financially but this book is more about their love of music and their life in the world of music than their material success. If you loved the music of the fifties and sixties, you will almost surely enjoy reading this book. näyttää 2/2 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
In 1950 a couple of rhythm and blues-loving teenagers named Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller met, discovered their mutual affection for R&B, and, as Jerry and Mike put it in this autobiography, it was the beginning of an argument that has been going on for more than fifty years with no resolution in sight. They had their first success with a song called "Hard Times" that became an R&B hit in 1952. They followed it another bluesy composition, "Hound Dog," for the inimitable Big Mama Thornton. A few years later "Hound Dog" would become a #1 hit for Elvis Presley, and Jerry and Mike became the King's favorite songwriters. They went on to write for the Coasters, the Drifters and many others. Along the way they mentored an ambitious young writer-producer named Phil Spector and influenced musician Burt Bacharach. Here they describe how two young guys created the soundtrack for a generation.--From publisher description. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
