Roberto Marquez was born in Mexico, but has spent most of his career living and working in the United States, first in Arizona, then in New Jersey. His large classical canvases combine symbols taken from history, legend and the folk arts of Mexico with a strong autobiographical element. Taken together, his qualities have led critics to see him as the natural successor to the legendary Frida Kahlo. Increasingly regarded as perhaps the most important artist to have emerged from Mexico since the generation of Kahlo and Rivera, Marquez looks set to become a key name in American art for the 21st Century. Marquez work is finely executed; the human figure dominates his paintings, which are often subtlety surreal.
The book is superbly illustrated throughout in full colour in addition to thumbnail illustrations of all the pictures included in each chapter which appear at the beginning of each chapter. There are over 120 mostly full page illustrations, including a few double page spreads, plus the 21 Dante illustrations. The large slightly over square format of the book accommodates the paintings comfortably, and the overall layout is very pleasing. ( )
