A beautiful picture book and a moving, interesting story based on the author's family history. Unfortunately the story is told in awkwardly rhymed doggerel verse with a limping metre ("Mama's packed the supper, the sheep are in their pens, it's time to go and visit the Seminole Indians") which, to my taste, seriously detracts from the impact of what could be a truly outstanding book. Summary: This book is about an African American family that goes to visit an Indian tribe every year. Their grandfather had escaped from slavery and the tribe took him under their wing. The celebration of the family being there walks you through steps that may happen in a regular celebration of the Native American heritage.
Critique: I think this was a cute book with a good story line.
Prompt: This would be a good book to read during the Native American unit in a Social Studies class.

This book was not in any way my favorite. I had to read it twice to figure out what was going on. It is a poetry book so it could be used in the classroom when learning about poetry. The little girl is going dancing with Indians so it could be a fun book to read when doing a Indian module in the classroom. ( )
