( ) This book is partly of the story of a young woman seeking her family's history in Afghanistan, which she left as a child. That aspect of the book is well done, with many memorable moments such as when the author met the Khadr family, when a young boy was astonished that she knew how to write and when she heard someone call a radio talk show to ask why people sell their daughters. The book is also partly a commentary on the situation in Afghanistan. This aspect of the book is less compelling. It is important to remember that this book was written in 2006, and a lot has happened in Afghanistan since then. It is also important to note that the author was 25 when she wrote it; and that she is a journalist, not an academic. She, perhaps, lacked the depth of experience and/or training that would have made this part of the book stronger. Overall, the book is episodic -- it reads like a complilation of articles. Maybe that reflects the fractured nature of Afghanistan itself? But I found the writing style somewhat clipped. Hamida Ghafour combines a biographical exploration of her family's history with explanations of the history/culture of Afghanistan. If your knowledge of the tribal culture of Afghanistan is limited (like mine), then this book is a terrific, well-written introduction for you with the bonus of a personalized story. I have mixed feelings about this book. It tells the true story of an Afghanistan-born, Canadian-raised female journalist who returns to her birth country in an attempt to describe both what has happened in that country throughout history, and how it has impacted her family. The author also chronicles her own family's history, and seeks to rediscover it through her travels. While it has interesting anecdotes sprinkled throughout, such as the story of Debbie, the American hairdresser who is empowering Afghan women in her own way, it just didn't hold my attention. Personally, I felt the most interesting aspect of the book was the description of how Afghan immigrants adapted to life in other countries, and the author's chilling encounter with the fanatical members of the Khadr family. That said, I have read other similar memoirs that were far more compelling. näyttää 5/5 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
An evocative family memoir and unique portrait of Afghanistan from a young Afghan journalist Hamida Ghafour's family fled Kabul after the Russian invasion. In 2003 she was sent back by the Telegraph to cover the country's reconstruction. She finds a place changed utterly from the world her parents had described and her grandmother -- an Afghan Virginia Woolf -- had written about. All around her is the West's first post-9/11 experiment with an Islamic democracy. But the people she meets reveal a different kind of nation building: the 'beautician without borders' whose school teaches women a new kind of independence; her cousin's determined parliamentary campaign; the archaeologist digging for his country's lost civilization in the form of a giant sleeping Buddha. As she participates in her country's present, its elusive past and her family's own story come vividly together for Hamida. But only when she's standing by her grandmother's grave -- after a heavily escorted Chinook trip to the wildest corner of the land -- does she start to find her own place in it all.
