Salomon Perel, or Sally for short, was born in Peine near Hanover, where his parents had a shoe shop. The Perels were Jews and fled to Poland to escape persecution in Nazi Germany. In 1939 the Germans invaded Poland and the apparent security was gone. “You should live!” said the mother to Sally, and with a bit of luck he made it across the border river into the Soviet-occupied part of Poland. But two years later the Wehrmacht moved in here too. Sally confronted the German soldiers and pretended to be a “Volksdeutscher”. Which wasn't wrong, even if for the other Germans a Jew wasn't one. Sally concealed his Jewishness, was taken to Braunschweig and put into an apprenticeship at Volkswagen. As a Hitler Youth, he survived while most of the Jews were murdered. In this book, which is told from Sally's first-person perspective, photos, mostly from Sally Perel's private possessions, document the stages of his adventurous survival. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
