Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:From the award-winning and critically acclaimed author of This Is My America comes another thriller about a wrongly accused teen desperate to recclaim both his innocence and his first love.
Life can change in an instant.
/> When youâ??re wrongfully accused of a crime.
When a virus shuts everything down.
When the girl you love moves on.
Andre Jackson is determined to reclaim his identity. But returning from juvie doesnâ??t feel like coming home. His Portland, Oregon, neighborhood is rapidly gentrifying, and COVID-19 shuts down school before he can return. And Andreâ??s suspicions about his arrest for a crime he didnâ??t commit even taint his friendships. Itâ??s as if his whole life has been erased.
The one thing Andre is counting on is his relationship with the Whitaker kidsâ??especially his longtime crush, Sierra. But Sierraâ??s brother Eric is missing, and the facts donâ??t add up as their adoptive parents fight to keep up the act that their racially diverse family is picture-perfect. If Andre can find Eric, he just might uncover the truth about his own arrest. But in a world where power is held by a few and Andre is nearly invisible, searching for the truth is a dangerous game.

As I started listening to this story of Andre, a high school senior who is arrested and incarcerated for thefts at a party. A backpack is found with stolen goods in his locker at the rec center. Andre maintains his innocence, but he keeps quite going through the juvenile justice system. He's let out on a monitoring program and community service. Shortly after, the COVID-19 lockdown begins. His family is highly impacted. His neighbors are a family with 3 adopted children of color and two white parents with 2 biological children.
There's a lot happening in this book. I thought about the books Invisible Man and Native Son, and I think this title is an homage to both. It's a look at the ways race, power, policing play out in contemporary life. The book is rooted in Portland and delves into the early days of COVID and the racial unrest after George Floyd's killing. The family next door is not what they appear and their fates are intimately ties with his.
I found Andre a character for whom to cheer, even when he makes choices that seem ill advised. He's got a supportive family and is connected with a number of mentors who help guide him. ( )
