5 stars for the art ( )

This is not the Sabrina I grew up with, but its an acceptable version compared to that godawful Chilling Adventures of Sabina book I had the misfortune to read a while back. A tidy little magical adventure with a main character who seems real enough despite all the witch stuff.

Tucked in the back is Nick Spencer's Archie and Sabrina #1, and that was just a dreary soap opera affair. Definitely skipping that book. ( )

I would have preferred more of the fun everyday spells like Sabrina changing her hair color as opposed to her fighting monsters, that’s just my sensibility, I’m not really one for action. I’m sure there are plenty of readers whose tastes are the opposite of mine and will favor those panels more than I did.

I enjoyed that this had some humor from Salem, an intriguing beginning to a love triangle (this might be the first Harvey of the many iterations of Harvey that I’ve read and watched where I actually do see some potential, though admittedly I lean more towards Ren), and I loved the vibrant use of color throughout, especially the purple skies at night.

If you’ve sampled the various versions of Sabrina, I’d say this one lands in a solid middle ground, it has lightheartedness and high school moments like the original comic and the Melissa Joan Hart series while dipping a toe into the darker territory of monsters like The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
