This murder was one of the first successful cases that used the Temporary Insanity defense. The book also described that this was the first time that the whole nation could find out "instant" news about the case due to the high-volume use of the Telegraph system. Only negative point.... it dragged on and on, but I guess that is what most court cases are like. Therre is much to say about this book but the one thing I will say is that it should be read. The author has dusted off an old trial (1859) and made it suspenseful. One vacillates between hoping he gets off and hoping he gets convicted. The speech of 150 years ago is quaint and requires study to be sure one understands what is being said. The Court Room scenes seem to far less formal than we think they are today. Before reading this book, the only knowledge I had of Dan Sickles was as one of Meade's corps commanders at Gettysburg. Now, I know a whole lot more. The crime itself likely would not even occur today and the defense would certainly fail. näyttää 3/3 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
It is two years before the Civil War, and Congressman Daniel Sickles and his lovely wife Teresa are popular fixtures in Washington, D.C. society. Because Congressman Sickles is frequently out of town, he trusts his friend, U.S. Attorney Philip Barton Key--son of Francis Scott Key--to escort the beautiful Mrs. Sickles to parties in his absence. Then one day an anonymous note sets into motion a tragic course of events that culminates in a shocking murder in broad daylight in Lafayette Square. This is the riveting true story of the murder and trial that sparked a national debate on madness, male honor, female virtue, fidelity, and the rule of law. Bestselling author Chris DeRose (The Presidents' War) uses diary entries, letters, newspaper accounts, and eyewitness testimonies to bring the characters to thrilling life in this antebellum true crime history. -- Adapted from Amazon. To his credit, the author does an excellent job of summarizing the actual trial and surrounding events. As an attorney, I appreciated the (then) novel concept of self-defense and other legal issues that developed during the proceedings.
Nonetheless, I simply wasn't captivated by the work. Perhaps it was the writing style- verbatim quotations from the period can be overwrought and tiring. Or perhaps it is simply that the event and trial don't justify a full-length book.
An objective and fair account... but hardly a compelling page turner. ( )
