Having led a charge against the Zol Empire armies conquering his homeland, veteran soldier Van is captured and imprisoned in the salt mines; the mine is attacked by wild dogs that spread a fatal disease, leaving Van and an orphan girl as the sole survivors. Events eventually carry Van and the girl Yuna to a settlement of the People of the Fire Horse, another people who have lost their homeland to the Zol Empire. Elsewhere, the genius doctor Hossal has been researching the "Black Wolf Fever", attempting to discover why it is fatal to the Zol while some native people seem immune; when he hears of a man who survived the epidemic in the mines, he sets out to find him. Van and mostly Hohsalle are still awesome, and it's fun to see more of Makokan's background. Sae also has a really great background, and her clan is cool. Mostly seeing how Hohsalle's clan has this really great medical network is pretty neat, and how they navigate the divide of wanting to help people and also being curious scientifically, and how that relates back to benefitting the most people with scientific discovery.
The story was kind of slow, which I really struggled with, but it is a very in-depth look at inter-clan politics, ethnic cleansing, and the importance of historic cultural practices in preserving the health of the land, animals, and people.
I look forward to reading the whole series when it comes out in English under Yen Press! In book 1,
