Commodore Grimes married with an adult son John has a pet project. The Flying Cloud is a lightjammer space ship and he cons Ralph Listowel into taking her, illegally, off world to test her. A shot from a Navy ship does something to its drive and they are thrown through several universes. In each universe they are the same people but on different ships, with different wives and jobs and positions. At the end it is hard to tell if they found their way back but the comment was that they did not find what Grimes wanted but something just as good. ( )
