Get out now while you still can." Of course, this book would be a lot shorter if Jack took my advice, and eventually he's in so deep (read: mafia) that to back out now would cost a lot of people their lives. Looking at it from just the corporate wheeling, dealing, corruption, and sabotage, I would have rated this 4 stars, as there were some nail-biting scenes, which tells me I was invested in the story to be tense for what they were getting into. There was some corny dialogue, but in some ways the corniness made it seem that much more genuine, especially when Jack would have to smooth things over when his technical/engineering staff would bicker at each other. Where I was not happy was whenever the women were involved. And then there's Lily, his "maid" while he's in Gamalia. He just can't resist her charms and pliability even though he has feelings for his very smart and pretty electrical engineer back home. Hey, Jack, maybe things with Carol wouldn't be so complicated if you'd just decline the "maid" service. Leave out the "romance" and this would have been a good read. I love corporate thrillers! This business thriller involves crime, corruption, murder, romance, and more... Jack's business in Denver is close to ruin, but an old friend Eddie brings him an opportunity that could solve everything, ... However it's on a Caribbean island notorious for its corporate crime and government corruption. Before long, Jack is so committed to the venture, that he has to carry on even after Eddie's unexplained murder, and the realization that he has become entangled both with corruption overseas, and organized crime back home. A romantic relationship grows with Carol, who works with him, and is loyal to him through all these problems. But he is vulnerable to temptation and seduction in the Caribbean, and also Carol reveals something about a past lesbian relationship,... A despised adversary, Victor, is in the background, working against them. Jack is tough enough to handle this, but as he gets in deeper, he realizes that Victor is working with corrupt officials, and has employed a sinister associate. Suspense builds as Victor determines to stop at nothing, to destroy Jack's business. And Carol's life may be at risk... I really enjoyed the twists and turns in this business thriller. The plot went at a good pace and made it difficult to put down.
If I were to give it the full five stars I’d like to see a bit more character development on the main cast and maybe dropping the ‘Lilly’ side plot (
