This was the first 'Camino' story I have ever read and I found the genre rather unfamiliar. Those who love this genre will no doubt welcome this latest tale. This simple but well-written book recounts the true story of the author's personal journey of reconciliation to his brother—a one-time drug addict—in an intensely frank and moving way. For me (someone with no interest in pilgrimage), the journey descriptions served as a background for the resolution of this far more important narrative. It is very difficult in true stories to achieve engaging character development – but not impossible. I found myself wishing the author could have more fully developed the characters of the main protagonists, and thus engage the reader with a sense of the developing drama. Instead, sentences are generally short and to the point in a 'matter of fact' sort of way. This does not detract, however, from the naturally powerful quality of the story, even without a more developed style of writing. I have never lived through the trauma of loving someone with an addiction, but it is to the author's credit that I was 'touched' just by reading of his family's situation. (Readers should be aware that this book contains some strong language). ( )

“Still, he was an addict...he would have to struggle with addiction for the rest of his life. The allure of drugs and alcohol would always be too strong for him to learn how to moderate. To love him, she said, meant to love him even when he fell, but never to enable him. When we drank champagne at New Years, she said, he would have to drink grape juice. Otherwise, if he kept falling into addiction, he would end up in one of three places: jail, institutions or death. He had already been jailed, and he was an institution. There was only one other place he could go. When she said that, I realized the gravity of what Cory was struggling with. Addiction was more than just a bad habit that he couldn’t kick. It was a struggle to break free from chains stronger than steel, chains that could suffocate him even when he thought he was free.”

Starting at one town and ending in another, each ‘etapa’ would present its own route, architectural sites, places to sleep and diverse terrain...As I pondered her importance, I realized that Father was not just inviting me to participate in a tradition that united pilgrims going back to the beginning of the Way. He was drawing me away from my worries about my future with my brother and asking me to focus on now—the pilgrimage ahead of me.”
“As I folded clean laundry, placed it into my backpack and put it on my back, I realized that it was my turn to shed excess baggage. I realized that my worries about Cory’s drinking were part of the excess baggage with me that I had carried for over a decade. I let fear get in the way of our relationship. It was not a healthy concern for my brother’s well-being but a crippling worry about our future, so much so that it stopped me from enjoying the time I had with him. It was time to let that worry evaporate and to enjoy the precious now we had together. None of us are guaranteed a future with our loved ones. If we don’t cherish moments with them for what they are, we risk not cherishing our loved ones for who they are but rather who we want them to be. When I realized that all Cory wanted me to live with him now—the burden of our past felt much lighter. Cory had shed his excess baggage while in prison, now it was my turn.”
