This book is a wonderful classic Christmas story. The children go to sleep anxiously awaiting the arrival of morning time dreaming sweet dreams. The parents on the other hand are just settling down for the night when something draws them from bed. Upon discovery of the mysterious noise the main character spies on Santa Claus and describes everything he sees. After Santa Claus has finished his Christmas duties he proceeds to the chimney and is back in his sleigh before you know it.

I have always loved this book. I usually can not make it a full year to the next Christmas to read this book. The illustrations draw you in and spark your imagination. The beautiful poetry is like lyrics that paint and even broader picture of the nights events. While reading this book you can almost feel the warmth of the fire and the brisk biting winds of a snowy eve.

This would be a great book to introduce the traditional, early American Christmas. It would be great to have a multicultural December holiday celebration. We could read books of many cultures and see how they celebrate “Christmas”. While celebrating a new culture each day we could do different games and activities to show how the children in that culture experience their special “Christmas” holiday.
