The author of the book was actually a participant in the battle. He wrote a journal and sent it to his brother in Wisconsin. The author died in another battle of the Civil War. The book was never published in book form until 1958. Its considered one of the formost references of the battle of Gettsburg. The author was an eye witness to Pickett's charge.
