The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery

The galleries are located on the National Mall, near the Smithsonian castle. The Freer Gallery of Art is located at Jefferson Drive at 12th Street, SW. and the Sackler Gallery is located at 1050 Independence Avenue, SW. The two museums are connected by an underground exhibition space.

They are part of the Smithsonian Institution and house one of the finest collections of Asian art in the world.

The library is located in room 2058 on the second floor of the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, which is adjacent to the Freer Gallery of Art.

The library is one of the finest Asian art libraries in the United States. It contains over 80,000 volumes. Many of the publications are in non-English languages and focus on Asian art and archaeology. Items relating to the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American painters whose works are in the Freer Gallery of Art are also included in the library.

Collection Strengths

Materials on Japanese ceramics, painting, and woodblock prints and resources for the study of Chinese painting, calligraphy, ceramics, jade, Buddhist sculpture, and ancient bronzes are amoung the library's strongest holdings. The subjects covered in the area of ancient Near Eastern art include Sassanian metalwork, ceramics, and cylinder seals. The library also houses an extensive collection of materials relating to Indian miniature painting and sculpture as well as on Islamic metalwork, ceramics, glass, and the arts of the book.

Other highlights include a collection of Biblical Greek manuscripts and fragments on parchment and papyrus from the third to the sixth century. Items from the Islamic world include Koran folios, illustrated and illuminated manuscripts and the Vever Collection, an important assemblage of the Islamic arts of the book from the 11th to the 19th century.

HOURS

The library reading room is open from 10 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, except on federal holidays.
