What's a fair price for Monte Cristo in very good condition? Ebay doesn't show sold listings after a certain date. I see some listed around $450 that haven't sold. Thanks

I have not traced sales for Monte Cristo, but every time I have seen a set for sale in a decent condition (very good or better), it has been offered at around $400+ or more.
On a quick look, there are currently at least 10 sets offered for sale (from professional booksellers and ebay sellers) - all, but one, for more than $400.
The one for $350 from "Friends of RRLS" found on Alibris has a description that is too short and no photos.
I don't know what a fair price for a very good set is.

I just purchased a set for $255 via auction that I would classify as very good. Two edges of the slipcase are splitting (very common with multi-volume sets) and the hinges are a bit loose, but otherwise the set looks stunning. At the time of purchase there were 4 or 5 others for sale ranging from slightly worst to slightly better condition than what I purchased that were priced anywhere from $500 to just over $1000, so I thought for sure this auction would land north of $300.

Congratulations, it’s a lovely set! Unsold books aren’t always a good guide to market price, though. Someone did subsequently buy the set listed on eBay for 500 USD which seems very expensive to me (1 000 USD is having a laugh), but non-Fine+ sets have also recently sold on eBay for 250 and some figure less than 242 (best offer accepted) and a set without its slipcase where the books had slightly bashed corners went for 179, so 250ish for VG+/NF with the slipcase seems pretty much what the market will bear, which I guess is the fair price (and that is why I’ve waited three years to buy it myself). If you happen to find a monthly letter inside you’ve done really well!

>4 GusLogan: Yes, good point, you need to track what books are actually selling for over time. I'm sure your patience has led to some great bargains over time. I've only been collecting for a couple years now, but hope to discover the fruits of such patience with some of the more elusive titles on my wishlist.
