I'm adding you to my interesting libraries because I just saw that you too loved the Colony of Unrequited Dreams. I haven't seen many people on here who've read it, and I loved it. I got the sequel out of the library and was just getting into it when it was due back... must try again.

Ballet Shoes was one of my favourites when I was a kid! What's your thesis on?

Wow - that sounds FABULOUS.

Am gutted to check Edinburgh Book Fest programme and realise that he's speaking 2 days *after* I go home again.... quite seriously contemplating taking extra two days off & buying extra train ticket.

Indeed :) Free-books-with-strings are a powerful incentive... Although - shame on me - I have written my review for LibraryThing ahead of the one for Waterstones, who actually sent me the book (shows where my loyalties are!!).

Just had to go back and re-read your comments - I share your suspicions of Patrick Ness's genius-ness. Have you been to that conference yet?

Hi - thanks for the note re: the Cranford production. I was aware of it and actually recorded it from PBS last year --- now if I can just find the tape!! I love reading these classics and then following up with a good movie version, so I'll be digging through my tapes to find it. Thanks again!

We had a lovely time in BA, I didn't get to tango, but did just about everything else.
Happy to be your 'man on the ground' here. One book I can suggest if you haven't already come across it is Bernard Beckett's Home Boys(longacre.co.nz has the teaching notes for this), he's a great writer and his Genesis will be released in the UK this year. It was quite brutal for many of those children that came to NZ and Australia after WW2 - no one knew that they were in for such harsh lives, treated so cruelly on the farms where they were billeted. Also there was the awful treatment in some of the Catholic orphanages especially in Australia. William Taylor's books are really great, I loved Jerome,and Land of milk and honey is also a powerful book, so glad that you discovered it on your New Zealand trip.

Hi, I'm enjoying reading your thread on the 100 books challenge. If you need any help sourcing or finding out about NZ children's books for your research let me know. I've worked in children's lit for a few years and know the range of books fairly well. Stefania's Dancing Slippers by Jennifer Beck is quite interesting about the journey & camp in NZ where Polish children lived before they were integrated into NZ society or reunited with parents during WW2. http://www.storylines.org.nz/book_detail...
