“Families might usually be bonded by blood, but maybe sometimes they’re bonded by shared secrets, by delicate mixture of caution and faith, by the conviction that hiding together is better in every way than hiding alone” (277).

I really loved this historical-fiction romance about two Newsies in the late 1950s. Nick, a churlish loner with a respectable reputation as a journalist, and Andy, the whimsical, waspish news owner’s son, first encounter each other when Andy is brought on—reluctantly—to learn the ropes of his father’s business in order to take over as news mogul owner. While these two appear to be total opposites, their initial reticent, working relationship very quickly morphs into a deeply, loyal and trusting friendship—and then to something beyond friendship, something both men are a bit fearful to accept. As these two friends explore the possibility of more, there’s a lot to love about their journey: the backdrop of a 1950s newsroom and news stories, the beatnik found family moments of music and dancing, the reality of what hiding was like for the queer community in the 1950s—the constant fear and isolation and missing out on “normal” things, and how even the smallest bit of progress can bring about the biggest dose of hope.

“He can believe that the future they have is worth more than his fear, and he can do what it takes to make that future as safe and happy as possible” (343).

This is a fun low angst queer romance set in 1960. That said, there is grief, death, and legitimate fear of being outed in a society where you could lose everything if found out as major plot elements. This is the 2nd book in this series-- the first set a few years earlier featuring Andy and Nick who are minor characters in this one.
I enjoyed Mark and Eddie's story. Mark's wariness to love again and to put Eddie's reputation at risk felt real. And Eddie was lovely in his enthusiasm for life.

This gave me Midsummer Moon and True Pretenses vibes but like sweeter, I suppose.

I still really liked this! But - I sat with this a few days and I am downgrading star rating because I keep thinking about moments of greatness interrupted by some outrageous trope stuff that troped a little too close to the sun for me. I know, I know how dare I, a romance reader, tire of genre convention or tropes - I am scum, the WORST. But I keep thinking about how scenes would be doing so well and then something like, "Love was somebody aiming a pistol at your heart while you sat there and acted like it was perfectly fine because you trusted them." . . . and like lol no this is absurd in a way I cannot tolerate. And like I kind of am over the non-starchy MC being SO SURPRISED the starchy MC is hot in bed - like how boring.

Anyway, so many great moments, quotes and feelings WHILE ALSO kind of mildly boring take on tropes etc. (also the Brigand Prince of Salerno plot held no flame to The Rake of Ronmoor I am not sorry).
