This is the size of a large picture book and has 24 fables. A fable is told on one page and on the facing page is a beautiful illustration by Santore

Check out Aesop's Fables for the basis of many tales and messages. Originally published in 1484, this colorfully illustrated book captures fables from Greek and Roman traditional writing. These short 24 fables feature the legendary The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse as well as The Hare and the Tortoise. These are stories you know and you'll recognize. They are timeless. Adults and children alike will appreciate this book with these illustrations.

This is a poem made into a story with illustrations. Thinking in terms of the lowly camel who is over burdened with packs of heavy bags attached to his back, but, and the author notes, he has to sleep in the dessert, cold by nigh and hot by day.

While birds have crackers, and poodles each noodles, a camel has anything given to him. While cats can nap in favorite chairs, and chickens roost, the camel laments that any place is good enough for him. Lambs and hens, kittens and pigs have beds or wonderful pens, not so for the camel who has sand, dusty, dusty sand. In the circus, the author points to the giraffe or an ox who can be ridden upon by a clown, but not so for the weighed down camel who has people and hundreds of pounds of additional objects.

But, the author praises, that the camel is lumpy, bumpy and humpy, and any shape is ok for them.

I can imagine a little boy sitting on his grandmother's lap while this lovely rhyming poem is read. And, of course the illustrations are lush, as always for Santore½

A mother pig had piglets that the farmer kept because he wanted them to be good "truffle hunters." The farmer loved the pig, but one day she went too far with her love of truffles. She was alive to bring truffle hunting piglets in the world, NOT to over eat all the truffles she could find. Thus, the farm grew very angry and told her that she and her truffle hunting piglets had to go .

Frightened, Bianca, the mother pig, had never been on her own. Living in a strange environment and searching for food for her piglets was no easy task. Soon, Bianca and her baby pigs discovered their own truffles, and they were Happy!

Night brought more fear as the wolves found them and tried to make them their prey. Binaca gave the wolf one of the delicious truffles. And because truffle hunting is not easy, he decided to walk with the pigs.

Befriending Bianca and her piglets was a blessing when an entire pack of nasty wolves descending upon them. When the friend, the big wolf snarled and challenged the pack of wolves, they acquiesced. And for the rest of their lives, Bianca, her little piglets and the large wolf lived together. This is a lovely spin to the tale we know of the Three Pigs.

As always, the illustrations of Charles Santore are crisp, clear and beautiful. i take time to find the samples of the artistry so that perhaps you will also grow to love the art of illustrators of wonderful tales.

The artistry of Charles Santore always leaves me wanting to find, and read more of his works. Lush, incredibly detailed, this is one of my favorites of Santore.

Written, as well as illustrated, the author writes a story of Noah's Ark and illustrates the building, and collection of two of every animal on the earth. This task must be completed before the Lord begins to flood the earth.

As Noah and his family work to accomplish this herculean task, a tiny mouse name Achbar joins the crowd of animals as they climb into the huge ark. In order to find safety, he hides behind the oscecones of the giraffes, the wool of the sheep, the feathers of the ostrich, behind the feet of the majestic elephants, and his life is spared.

Thus there are three, not two mice on the Ark. While the story is original and unique, it is the illustrations that held me captive. I find solace in art and in illustrations of children's books.

This book is at the top of my list of favorites. If you enjoy imagery, good writing, and like me, find peace in taking a lot of time studying each page, then this is a book you will enjoy!

Charles Santore is one of my favorite artists. Each and every book I've read with his illustrations, provides stress release and joy by simply examining the beauty of his works.

In this story a young princess notes a caccoon as it drops into her mother's tea. As Princess Hsi-Ling Chi tells her mother that she will place the string around her waist and will see how far it will take her. This leads to a magical journey of many miles, a dragon, a huge black spider, the discovery of the great palace and mountains.

Tired, exhausted, the little princess looks to see the thread that tethers her to her mother, alas the string is broken. Coming upon a small hatch, she finds a man at a loom. Happy to see her, he explains that he was waiting for her and her thread to complete a beautiful robe for the Emperor. Taking a nap, she awakens to find the thread still wrapped around her waist. She returns to her mother and tells her of her adventure.

This story starts off by Bianca being the perfect pig to hunt truffles for her farmer. She one day realized that she enjoyed eating the truffles that her owner became upset and throw her and her 2 piglets out of the farm. They were now forced to roam around since they had only lived on a farm their entire lives. Bianca went to the woods to hunt for truffle, which she enjoyed. One night a large wolf approaches them and has bad intentions, yet Bianca thought quickly and shared her truffle with the wolf so that he wouldn't eat them. The wolf enjoyed it that he decided to protect the 3 pigs from the other wolves in the area and they lived happily ever after. Children would enjoy this story since it is a great alternative to the three little pigs story that we are familiar with.

Thus far in my journey to read as many of my illustrated book acquisitions, this book is at the top of the list in beauty and creativity.

When we were young, my sisters and I stumbled upon my father's book of Aesop's Fables. The book seemed scary. and filled with animals devouring each other.

In this exquisitely illustrated book, the illustrations render the tales not as frightening as when I was little. Santore, illustrates in large format, and tells the tale of the fable while then explaining the moral of the story.

A dancing monkey becomes a king. Filled with hubris, he easily accepts a morsel of food from the fox, leading him to be trapped. The fox rightfully told the monkey king that if he was a king, he should be smarter than to accept bait. The moral is "A position earned without merit is as easily lost as gained." Something today's leaders might ponder.

When a fox sees bunches of grapes hanging high out of his ability to reach them, he continues to jump into the air. Walking away with an air of haughtiness, he remarks "I thought those grapes were ripe, but now I see they are quite sour." The moral is It is easy to despise what you cannot get."

When a stately heron, standing in the water, sees many large fish, he remarks "Such small fry is certainly not suitable fare for a Heron." As the day progressed, the fish went deeper into the water and the heron was not able to obtain them. He had to suffice for one small snail. The moral is do not be too hard to suit or you may have to be content with the worst or with nothing at all."

I highly recommend this lovely book!

This is a beautifully illustrated telling of the story of Noah and the ark through the eyes of a little mouse who stows away on the ark. However instead of the voice God, Noah follows the instructions of a voice from the sky. Is this a bible story written for atheists?

Twenty-four of Aesop’s well-known [and some not so well-known] animal fables together in a richly-colored, superbly-illustrated volume. Stories include “The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing,” “The Fox and the Grapes,” “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse,” and “The Hare and the Tortoise.”

These timeless tales with their universal truths will help young readers understand the benefits of being humble, of sharing, of being generous, of helping others. These stories are perfect for parents to share with their children.

This book is part of the Kohl’s Cares program.

Recommended.

I absolutely love these, my grandfather used to read these to me and my cousins when we were young and I have great memories with these. I think it would be a pretty tough sell to get these into a classroom, but that the lessons in them are now very much infused in modern day children's books. One thing I really like about these is that the lesson is actually at the bottom of the story. I think the language is tough and again they wouldn't be really accessible to kids today but I do think that they inspired a lot of today's fairy tales and fables.

Yet again another story I had only heard bits and pieces of I had only seen the seven dwarfs, the poisonous apple, and the big talking mirror. I never knew the detailed plot of the mother being envious and her guard taking her to the forest to set her free. I never knew why she lived with dwarfs until I realized it was the only house she could find in the woods. The ongoing attempts to get rid of snow white and asking the mirror the tradition quote "Mirror, Mirror on the wall who is fairest of them all? " provided repetition and unity throughout the stories plot. The glass casket to allow the dwarfs to admire her black hair, white skin, and rosy cheeks was the same here and the prince coming up the mountain made me see true loves kiss coming to save Snow White. I loved that although I thought these longer fairy tales would be boring and have unnecessary details. These captivated and drew me into the story. The poisonous comb and the foods and disguise of the stepmother drew me in to see what would happen next.

I actually liked this book even though when I was a kid, I hated this book. I loved how after each story, the author wrote out each main idea and made it clear that it was the main idea, the illustrations were extremely detailed and the author did a great job putting in all of the more important fables that were written. The first thing I liked was the how the author specifically put the overall message on the bottom, as while some of main messages were obvious from the story, not all were. One example of this is from the story The Crab and His Mother, which is about a mom wanting her child to walk a certain way and releasing not even she can do it; the main idea was "example is more powerful than precept." Along with the writing, I really liked the detail and time that was obviously put into each and every one of the illustrations, as all are extremely colorful and different. One example of the detail put into these illustrations is when there is an image of two peacocks, each tail feather is intricately drawn and you can see each and every small feather. The last reason I really liked this book, is that all of the fables that author included are the more important Aesop's fables, with many being well known, so the reader would be interested in reading and looking at the images of the stories they know. One example of this is that he included Country Mouse and City Mouse, but also lesser known ones to mix it up, like The Monkey as King. The main message of this book is that everyone has flaws, but we need to work together to make the world a place everyone is happy in.

For Christmas, I ordered an mp3 player (Library of Classics) that was pre-loaded with 100 works of classic literature in an audio format. Each work is in the public domain and is read by amateurs, so the quality of the presentation is hit or miss.

The Wizard of Oz is an iconic motion picture, from a children’s book written by L. Frank Baum. Everyone should be familiar with the movie, and while the book is obviously very similar, it contains quite a bit of extra material as well as a few major differences. For example, in the book, Dorothy does not wear ruby red slippers, but silver shoes instead.

This book is an excellent beginner book for young readers, though there is perhaps more violence than some may consider appropriate for very young children. Highly recommended.½
