If I could I would give this novel a 7. Living in Miami my entire life with Havana basically down the street like New Jersey is to New York, I can feel the breeze, smell the rum, and taste the sweat. Well done.

Richly, densely overwritten, worth the necessary second and third readings.

I enjoyed this book and its' great insight into Native Americans. It did a great job of showing how badly we treated the Indians. I would have given it a higher rating but I felt it really rambled with some of the philosophical writings. I just didn't think that this added that much to the book. That being said, I think this book should be compulsory reading for history classes on America in the 19th and 20th centures.½

Read in June 2001. Set in France during the Nazi occupation. This is a story of a painter and his mistress. It generated a lot of discussion.½

This book is an odd one. One side is Thomas Sanchez, and you flip it over and its Lawrence Clark Powell. Both short stories are wonderful. Powell's predates Sanchez by 20 years, but the themes are similarly about California fires and landscape.
