This book almost reads like a quiet reminder to adults to remember the introverted children around them rather than a story FOR introverted children. It has a simple, direct message, and some brief cute moments, but it's also fairly bland, even at the points when the protagonist is exploring via his rich imagination. Part of this could be the art style; it's quite flat and empty and doesn't really emphasize points as well as it could. Overall, a fine little book but nothing remarkable.

Ik was een stil kind, net als Emiel, de hoofdpersoon in dit prachtige boek. Ook ik werd verlegen genoemd. En misschien was ik dat ook wel, misschien ben ik dat nog steeds. Maar ik was/ben bovenal introvert, net als Emiel. Van buitenaf lijkt hij verlegen, maar vanbinnen borrelt en bruist het. Zijn fantasie laat hem de wildste avonturen beleven. En wij lezen mee.
We lezen én kijken mee. Het verhaal is mooi maar de tekeningen maken het buitengewoon prachtig. Dit boek is een pareltje. Voor jong én oud. Een hart onder de riem voor introverte personen, een inkijkje voor extraverte personen.
Mooi, mooi, mooi. En boek om verliefd te worden en te delen met alle (stille) lieverds die je kent. Ik wou dat ik dit boek 30 jaar geleden had gelezen, dan had ik me minder alleen gevoeld.
Met een boekje in een hoekje voelde nog nooit zo goed!… (lisätietoja)
