Sadly not my favorite R&J retelling, and I love the forbidden romance trope! I really liked the premise, dueling mariachi bands with an old family feud and two people from the warring families falling in love despite the animosity between their parents & in this case, the uncle. But the execution sadly fell flat for me.

I loved the Latinx spin on this well-known tale, and reading about the culture and family dynamics by an author of that same background. I wished there wasn’t always a translation after most of the Spanish phrases…I felt like that slowed down the story a bit (I don’t mind looking up words and phrases I don’t understand). I also liked Mariana’s character a lot and could really relate to her need for putting others above herself and eventually learning to bring down her walls for Angelo. And I truly adored the tale of sisterly love between her adopted family!

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Angelo. I felt like he had no real personality outside of being the perfect man with zero flaws. The generations-long family feud was resolved so quickly and too easily. The story seemed like it couldn’t decide what direction to go in - to focus on the mariachi band competition or the family dynamics, or the family feud. As a result, there was a mix of all three. I was also really confused what was going on with Angelo and his uncle and the whole financial situation with the Capuletas. Maybe I missed something crucial somewhere.

The writing was also heavyhanded and very telly many times and drew me out of the story.

But my biggest gripe was that I didn’t feel anything when I read this story. I wanted to root for Mariana and Angelo to fight for their love and push through their and their families’ differences to be together. I wanted to feel the tension between the two families. And I wanted to feel anger at the Monteros for what they did to the Capuletas. Sadly, I didn’t feel any sort of tension or a fear that they would be found out when they were together, that *I* also wanted to appreciate the stolen moments they had, and I wanted so badly to feel that.

3 stars overall - I finished the book, but it just wasn’t for me.

Thank you to the author and Bloom With Tall Poppy Writers FB group.

I really enjoyed the first one in the series but in this one I knew exactly what was going on and what was going to happen and I was correct after reading the ending. Sometimes second, third, et al series books don't work for me. Sorry!

Thanks to Goodreads for a digital advance reader copy. All comments and opinions are my own.

Loved the cover art and the title. While the Hispanic culture (language, music, food) was authentic, the story itself was a little predictable and typical of the enemies to lovers rom-com trope. And the sex scenes were on the steamy side. Now that’s not necessarily a negative for everyone, but it’s just a heads up.

Twenty-eight-year-old Catalina “Cat” Capuleta and her eight sisters have just been crowned the first all-female Battle of the Mariachi Bands champions. She is immediately invited to come on tour (without her sisters) to write new music for superstar mariachi heart-throb Patricio Galán. They are both singers, single, and sexy. Catalina wants to remain professional but she’s so flirty it’s no wonder Patricio has trouble keeping his mind on the music.

But there is another reason he’s asked Cat to help with songwriting – an emotional issue with his famous father has created severe writer’s block that threaten to hinder the next two albums he is contracted for. As he and Cat spend time together on tour, they discover they both have more than their love for music in common – a secret nemesis neither cares to discuss. These family issues end up helping them to develop their relationship and grow closer to understanding each other.

I liked Cat’s strength and discipline, her persistence in fighting the glass ceiling in mariachi music. But she was so flirty, especially with Patricio, that she seemed to be sending conflicting messages about being treated like an equal vs. like a sexy vamp.

In contrast to the flirting and continual sexual chemistry of both characters was the strong thread of family commitments. I liked that even though Cat is on tour for seven weeks, she eats dinner with her familia every night via video chat. Might be a little implausible but sweet.

Lots of Spanish words and phrases, several Shakespearean references, entertaining description of concert performances, as well as the ultimate breaking down of superstar images and revealing of personal childhood pain that brings these two characters together in a predictable yet happy ending.
