- Jan Novák (b. 1953) is a Czech-American author, screenwriter and playwright. He has published extensively in both Czech and English, also translating numerous works of Vaclav Havel into English. His English-language novels include Commies, Crooks, Gypsies, Spooks, and Poets and The Willys Dream Kit. Novák received his undergraduate education at Shimer College, a small Great Books college in Illinois, and later at the University of Chicago, where he also completed his master's degree. Novák has received numerous awards for his work, including the Carl Sandburg Award and the Magnesia Litera award. (from Shimer College Wiki)

Rudolf Vrba a Alfréd Wetzler. Dva vězni z Osvětimi, kterým byla přisouzena historická role utéct z koncentráku a podat světu svědectví o zvěrstvech páchaných v nacistických továrnách na smrt. Pravděpodobnost, že se jejich záměr zdaří, byla mizivá, ale nakonec byli uprchlíci přece jenom úspěšní. Když se dostali do bezpečí židovské komunity v Žilině, jejich pocit, že mají vyhráno, brzy vyprchal. Pochopili, že ani tady nejsou mezi svými a že jim hrozí smrt téměř jako v Osvětimi. A tak se Vrba s Wetzlerem ocitají opět na začátku své mise. Nikdo jim nevěří a jejich zprávu nebere svět dostatečně vážně. Přitom hrají o čas. Jan Novak was born and grew up in Czechoslovakia, in a Provincial Town of Thirty Thousand Souls. He frequently reminds us of this fact, with capital letters. There are many such capital letters in the book and if Egregiously Unnecessary and Pretentious Capitalization annoys you, this is not the book for you. Aside from this eccentric authorial quirk, the narrative of Novak's return to his native land with family in tow, in the wake of the collapse of Communism, is often interesting.
