Förutom Jon Morris tre böcker om i stort sett hopplösa seriefigurer har Quirky Books låtit Hope Nicholson skriva en fjärde, The spectacular sisterhood of superwomen, med lite annat fokus: dessa kvinnliga seriefigurer behöver vare sig vara obskyra eller speciellt konstiga, utan är i några fall bland de allra mest populära som står att finna. Ej heller är de alla egentligen superhjältar: denna samling försöker måla upp kvinnornas historia i serievärlden, vare sig de uppträtt i rutorna eller stått för ord eller bild. De är dock nästan samtliga amerikanska eller kanadensiska.

Från början var seriemediet inte den manliga domän det utvecklades till när serier främst såldes via unkna specialistbutiker: det fanns förvisso manligt dominerade genrer, men andra riktade sig till kvinnor (skjutsköterskor och romans), och en del gick hem hos båda kön däribland superhjältar. Naturligtvis har kvinnor i serier också varit föga mer än sexobjekt och ögongodis, men även sådana serier har ibland lyckats överraska med humor eller oväntade djup.

I stort kan historien beskrivas som att i början (40-talet) fanns såväl variation bland figurerna som skaparna, men sedan kom männen hem från kriget, distributionskanalerna ändrades, och de riktigt stora förlagen tappade sina kvinnliga kunder och kreatörer. Därefter har båda lyckats ta mer och mer plats, samtidigt som rasism och homofobi börjat rensas undan så att serier kan nå ännu vidare publik.

Fantastic artwork and a great collection of indigenous stories from a variety of North American cultures and traditions.

I read about half in one day and the other half way later on another day. I skimmed through quite a bit. It was honestly just kind of boring which bummed me out because it looked so cute!

More of a collection than an anthology (excerpts of stories are collected rather that whole short stories), Moonshot is an interesting look into cultural myths of native peoples, mainly Native Canadians. The artwork, then, varies in style, tone, and form, but there's never an amateur attempt in the collection.

After reading some reviews I saw that the superheroes that meant a lot to me growing were not mentioned... and like yeah new superheroes but I think what drew me initially was learning about those that sorta shaped me.

The stories didn't work for me. Most of the stories didn't stand on their own. If you didn't know what the theme was for the story collection you would be utterly confused. the few that could stand on their own were not that good. I liked them but I already have forgotten what they were about.

Also I don't think they were all sci-fi. Just because something happens in a unknown future doesn't make it a good sci-fi. To me science-fiction explore humans in a unknown setting. Most of the stories felt very familiar with the same problems people have today. Why make those kind of stories science-fiction. What makes the story different when you write in that genre? I don't think they would be any different. And that's a shame because I really wanted to read science-fiction without the same European/heterosexual viewpoint.

I'm really having a hard time coming up with a rating for this anthology. My first instinct for a rating was 2,5 stars. It was ok/I liked it. But was it more ok than liking it? I really don't know.

I expected something different. I can't remember what, but it is one of the reasons it took so long for me to complete this one.

In my updates I have written in a few sentences how I felt about the stories/comics.

I think most of the time it felt too short to me. Which is a bit hypocritical of me because that's what an anthology is about. But with other anthologies the stories are short, but feel more complete.

Which is a shame because I like reading about love.

P.S. NINE MONTHS?! WTH?

I'm a relative newcomer to Canada, able to trace back only four generations before I run into a relative that immigrated to Canada instead of being born here. I have no native blood in me whatsoever. And, if I'm honest, I know exceedingly little about Canada's indigenous population, who walked this land for generations before we showed up and fucked everything up.

Still, for all of that, I found myself captivated both by the stories and legends presented in this collection, as well as the stunning artwork.

I'll still claim to be mostly ignorant of native customs and lifestyles, but this collection, beautiful in both design and production, goes a little way to educating me.

And a total shout-out to Myth Hawker Travelling Bookstore, who introduced me to this graphic novel and ensured I didn't just set it back down again.

While overall, I felt the stories in the first volume were stronger as a whole, I have to say there were a few stories in this one that gutted me in a way none did the first time around.

Once again, the stories, and/or the retelling of indigenous legends, were wonderful to read, if not always completely understandable by a totally white guy, at the art captured the flow and feel of the stories very well.

Overall, an excellent follow-up to the first volume.

This is a lovely, gratifying collection of perspectives on what it's like to fall in and out of love as a geek girl and that how we choose to love is A-OK. The representation is super inclusive and spans a lot of geekery. There were a few essays I chose to skip when they pertained to a certain kind of geek life that I don't participate in and had a harder time following, but almost all the other essays were SPOT ON.

Most of these short comics felt like they were just beginning to scratch the surface and could have been fleshed out, but I am so happy this project was undertaken and look forward to reading more of these authors/artists in depth.

Ordningen jag läst de av Hope Nicholson redigerade antologierna med essäer om nördars kärleksliv är inte den naturliga, varför jag nu precis avslutat den första delen, The secret loves of geek girls. Som tidigare är det fråga om korta texter eller serier där olika nördar, här enbart kvinnliga, berättar om sina kärlekar, ofta romantisk-sexuella men även platonska eller till olika typer av populärkultur eller teknik.

Vissa skriver om lyckade relationer, andra om misslyckade. Många skriver om vägen till självkännedom, en del analyserar populärkulturella troper. En del närmar sig det barnförbjudna, men för det mesta är händerna ovanför täcket. Till skillnad från senare delar är även stilen ganska tam, och även om nörderiet gör att inte alla delar kommer vara helt begripliga för alla läsare, så kommer det i huvudsak vara för att man missar referenser, inte på grund av stilistiska val.

Har man läst några av de andra böckerna i serien vet man dock om man gillar det här: det är mer av samma, och lika bra, eller dåligt, för att hjälpa en att förstå sig själv och kanske känna sig mindre ensam.

A really solid collection from a pretty wide variety of authors; many of the stories are pretty good and the few I didn't love are pretty skippable. I especially enjoyed the pieces by Darcie Little Badger and Daniel Heath Justice! But overall a very good anthology, and one I'd recommend to any people interested in sci-fi/fantasy and in diversifying who they read in those genres.

I was worried after reading the first two stories in this collection -- vague and weird tales by a few of the only authors who also contributed to the first volume -- but the quality picked up with the third story by a new author about the power of hair and friendship. The rest of the volume was mostly new writers also, and I generally enjoyed or admired their tales of indigenous people in the past, present and future.

The ratio of indigenous creators improved with this volume to two-thirds, with the non-indigenous mostly providing art for a majority of the stories.

I'll be picking up the third volume at the library this afternoon.

An admirable mission to bring indigenous voices to comic books has mixed and uneven results in this graphic anthology. About half of the creators of the short stories presented are identified as First Nations/Native American, and a few long-time comics professionals are thrown in, like George Freeman of Captain Canuck fame, Lovern Kindzierski, and David Mack, whose Daredevil story introducing the origin of Echo (Maya Lopez) is excerpted here.

The stories tend toward superhero, fantasy, horror, and science fiction spins on indigenous folklore and culture, with a few more traditional adaptations sprinkled in. The quality of the art is pretty high, but the writing delivers quite a few clunkers with stories that are barely vignettes, hard to follow, clumsily told, or just not satisfying.

My library has the next two volumes, and I will definitely be checking them out to see how this project develops.

Moonshot is a collection of comic book art & stories by Native American creators. The works range from an excerpt from a mainstream superhero comic to ancient American stories. The settings also run the gamut of past, present, and future. The common threads that bind them together is the cultural sensibilities and the excellent art and storytelling. Either is a good enough reason to buy this book and put it on your shelf.

The LGBTIQA community is often described as a minority. And while this is true, a world population of 7.5 billion people means that we are not as small as we sometimes feel. In fact, the Intersex Society of North America estimates that 1 in 2000 babies are born intersex, so there is a higher population of intersex people in the world than there are Jewish people. And that’s just for intersex people.

We are a clamouring of colour and a clamouring of voices. We are as diverse as we are numerous. And sometimes, in media, I get frustrated when a single queer character is represented. I know as many queer people as I do straight people and I meet more people every day.

… enter Love Beyond Body, Space and Time, the indigenous LGBTIQA anthology. I love queer anthologies because they have a multitude of queer stories that I experience every day.

I loved this collection. It feels authentic. These first nations writers (like Richard Van Camp, Darcie Little Badger, Gwen Benaway and Daniel Heath Justice) bring their characters to life with such care and gentleness. I felt safe reading this collection, because I knew that queerness would not be trivialised, undermined or sexualised.

My heart ached for Emma and Cassie to find each other. Benaway’s story, “Transitions” was visceral and sensual in that I felt it, saw it, touched it, smelled it, tasted it. Darcie Little Badger’s story was slow to build but ultimately satisfying, a quiet triumph amongst the stars.

There were so, so many beautiful and articulate voices, how can I describe them all to you? Reading this collection felt like looking up at the stars. An ocean of little lights, and I wanted to read them all.

The best part about this collection (apart from the idea that a young, LGTBIQA Two-Spirit person might read this and recognise themselves in a way they can feel to the marrow of their bones) is the fact that I now have an army of First Nations authors to recommend people.

There is a future for indigenous, two-spirit people and what a glittering beast it is.

Now, if someone could pluck a second volume from thin air, that would be perfect. ❤

Det känns som jag borde skriva något mer intelligent och kortfattat än jag riktigt förmår för att sammanfatta The secret loves of geeks, redigerad av Hope Nicholson: en hel mängd talangfulla personer har ju skrivit om så många aspekter av kärlek, och vanligen också nördighet. Kanske är det bäst att börja med Patrick Rothfuss essä, som avslutar samlingen och som diskuterar de olika betydelserna i ordet »kärlek«, och att romantisk kärlek långt ifrån är den enda sorten, och att fokuset på den, och i synnerhet den sort som kan slå över i svartsjuka, inte är nyttigt.

Ty bland det icke obetydliga antalet bidrag som fokusera på just romantisk kärlek i alla de olika former den kan ta och numer allt oftare tillåts ta, så finns det också utrymme för det som är det avskiljande ordet i titeln: det kan handla om kärlek tack vare nörderier, kärlek trots nörderier, kärleken till dem, eller alltihop samtidigt. Formaten på berättandet varierar: en del är vanliga textbaserade essäer, en del är serier, en del är mer av hybridformer. De flesta historier är överraskande positiva: trots att önskan att accepteras är ett ofta återkommande tema, och ilska över hur en del saker står till inte är ovanligt, så är det sällan kärleken är totalt olycklig, inte ens den som inte varar (möjligen undantaget den till Star Wars, där såren efter fantommajonnäsen fortfarande inte läkt).

Den sammantagna bilden man får är att nördkulturen är en sorts friare värld, där annat än den typiskt heteronormativa, maskulint anpassade kärleken får finnas. Det vet jag inte; tyvärr finns det ju flera exempel på hur folk som en gång skulle setts som nördar bildar mobbar via internet och försöker tysta det som avviker från deras syn på verken. Nörderi har ju alltid haft drag av eskapism in i en bättre värld, med större möjligheter och där ondskan kan besegras, men det är så lätt att tro att alla definierar ondska på samma sätt. Även om denna ensidighet här tycks vara önskad finns den likväl där, men med tanke på den stora bredd som trots allt finns är det nästan löjligt att fråga efter mer. Vänta alltså inte en alltför kritiskt djuplodande undersökning, och gläds åt den stora lycka som trots allt bärs fram.½

Det är en lång lista med kvinnor som bidragit till The secret love of geek girls redux, under redaktion av Hope Nicholson, och som berättar om diverse gamla flammor: hur de nu bor grannar med någon de en gång skrev slashfic om, hur de hängde på Livejournal och skvallrade med en klasskompis om killar med Sagan om ringen som täckmantel, hur de skapade ett seriealbum och skaffade sig bås på konvention och mest fick dumma frågor, eller om en serie de tecknade en gång för länge sedan med en massa referenser som ingen längre förstår.

Historierna spänner över en hel mängdstämningslägen, från en tämligen oskyldig men i stunden pinsam historia om att bli påkommen med att bli förtjust i ett skelett i en musikvideo till en berättelse om att som fjortonåring råka på en sju år äldre man i ett forum för Final fantasy, en man som till slut körde från Chicago till Kanada för att träffa henne och som senare kom med förslag på giftermål; en historia som det tog år att lägga någorlunda bakom sig så att bilden av vad ett förhållande skall vara blev någorlunda rimlig. De flesta historierna är tack och lov mindre smärtfyllda än så: det är inte den enda med en allvarlig ton, men de andra håller är snarare upprörda över saker och tings allmänna tillstånd, inte hur korkad en enskild man var och hur ovillig omgivningen var att se det olämpliga i hans beteende.

Det finns ett par negativa saker som bör sägas: papper och layout av textsidor är sällan något man blir glad av: den senare ser ut som något som slängts ihop på två några i en ordinär textredigerare. Lite svårare att åtgärda är att med dryga tjugo bidragsgivare på ett femtital sidor är det med nödvändighet inga långa historier, och när många av bidragen är i form av serier är ekonomiskt berättande än mer av nöden. Ofta lyckas det väl, men ibland hinns frågan inte mer än att beröras innan det är tack och hej, dags för nästa. Vill man stanna kvar och en stund njuta av minnet av internet när det var ungt och fruktbart och trollen ännu mest höll till under stenar och avsides broar, eller le åt hur flirtandet i Casablanca förstört verkliga interaktioner för alltid, så får man anstränga sig själv lite. Vilket möjligen är en del av poängen.

A collection of comics about the birth of viral webcomics. Some of them are about individual comics (e.g., This is Fine), and others are about full webcomic series (e.g., Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal). The art was pretty interesting, though I would have gotten more out of a lot of them if I'd been familiar with the memes beforehand. I particularly appreciated the examples of the comics in question, though it might have been helpful to have those before the story comics, to provide context. Either way, it was a fun (and wholly apropos) way of presenting some recent webcomic history.

Exuberant collection of essays and graphics celebrating the thrill of fandom: how wonderful it is to truly enjoy something, particularly in the company of like-minded others.

Lost interest at 50%..
There were some good stories there but it was so uneven I felt bored after a while..
