The "enhanced interrogation" that became famous in Americas Global War on Terror originated in techniques the British experimented with in a series of colonial conflicts through the 1950s and '60s and deployed in 1970s Northern Ireland.

When I was (briefly) picked up by the British military in 1969 (for taking photographs of them breaking down barricades), it was an exasperated McGuffin that came along to get me out.
