Spotting for Nellie Tekijä: Pamela Lowell

Despite a plot reminiscent of an after school special about the dangers of teenage drinking, the characters are interesting and I appreciated the details about brain injury recovery. The back and forth viewpoints especially from the perspective of "Nellie's brain" ultimately didn't work for me. Still, the book offers enough compelling content to warrant a read for the YA audience.

This book was rather ho-hum. Having the story told from various points of view was good, except for Nellie's brain. I know why the author did this, allowing Nellie to have a voice despite her brain injury, but I still found it ridiculous. Claire, the main character frequently annoyed me. She treated her friends badly and had a real "woe is me" attitude. Also, the ending was just too tidy and happily-ever-after to be believable.

Adult Reader Reaction: There were times when I felt very frustrated by Spotting for Nellie and other times I thought the story was spot-on and something every teen should read. I liked that both Nellie and Claire had a voice in the story (each narrated chapters), but I didn't always like Claire. Even though this was a different dynamic between the sister, the coming-of-age elements were a bit too pat for a story that could have so much depth. It also bothered me that the resources at the end focused on gymnastics and brain injuries - for parents! Surely there have to be some good resources for families to share dealing with teen alcohol use and divorce

Pros: The events that unfold give today's high school students an up-close story of how little things - particularly anger behind the wheel and alcohol - can have a BIG impact on your life.

This book shows what it's like to be abandoned, to have no constant company but the hope that your mom will come back. The girl in this book struggles to adjust and change, until she gets to a home were she's accepted for who she is and loved.

It was selected because it's about something that really happens.
